About this file

This Statement of Work (SOW) details requirements for a customized machine base for cannon manufacturing process equipment at the Watervliet Arsenal. The machine base must accommodate workpieces between 2,500-6,750 mm in length, with outer diameters of 80-350 mm and weights up to 2,250 kg. Specific technical specifications include a machine bed length of 18,000-19,000 mm, primary and secondary linear guide rails with integrated absolute position scales (equivalent to SCHNEEBERGER MONORAIL specifications), and helical gear racks mounted on precision ground surfaces.

The contractor will be responsible for designing, fabricating, and installing the machine base, including site preparation, rigging, and onsite training. Installation will occur at the Watervliet Arsenal, with the contractor supervising machine placement and initial setup. The Arsenal will provide the installation site and basic utility connections. The contract includes a standard one-year commercial warranty covering onsite service for labor, parts, and materials, with free application and technical support. A site visit to the Arsenal after contract award is highly recommended to understand the existing manufacturing process and machine placement requirements.

Statement of Work For

Customized Machine Base for Cannon Manufacturing Process Equipment

1.0 Description

1.1 The statement of work defines the requirements and specifications for the customized cannon manufacturing process equipment machine base weldment and supplemental weldments to facilitate the finalization of design concept, fabrication, test fitment of sub-system fixtures, shipping, rigging, installation, and training or equal. This statement of work’s defined requirements and deliverables are to be used in the selection and procurement of a custom fabricated machine base.

2.0 Scope

2.1 The scope of this project includes the main base weldment(s), pedestal weldment intended for fixture mounting, supplementary mounting braces for various sub-systems, motion guides and ways, gear racks, mounting or anchoring points for integrated automation components detailed in the requirements section of this statement of work.

3.0 Requirements: The contractor shall provide a design concept, final approved design, and fabricated machine base and identified accompanying weldment(s) and/or fixture base(s) that conforms to the following minimum required specifications:

3.1 Workpiece/sample characteristics & capacities:

3.1.1 Dimensions:

Description Value Units

Minimum Length 2500.00 mm Maximum Length 6750.00 mm Minimum Outer Diameter 80.00 mm Maximum Outer Diameter 350 mm Maximum Weight 2250 kg

3.1.2 The workpiece will be fixtured in a state that mimics the cannon barrel being mounted in the weapon system turret (horizontally and cantilevered).

3.1.3 The workpiece will be held static, and rotation is not permissible once fixtured in place. Rotation is permissible during locating and fixturing the workpiece operation.

3.2 Machine Base Specifications:

3.2.1 Min/Max Machine Bed Length: 18000/19000 mm

3.2.2 Min/Max Machine Bed Height: 525/750 mm

3.2.3 Min/Max Machine Bed Width: 2000/2250 mm

3.2.4 Min Distance from Spindle Centerline to Bed Tabletop: 1125 mm

3.2.5 Min Primary Linear Guide Rail Lenth: 16750 mm

3.2.6 Min/Max Primary Linear Guire Rail Separation: 1200/1250 mm

3.2.7 Min Secondary Linear Guide Rail Length: Length of Bed

3.2.8 Min Secondary Linear Guide Rail Separation: 350 mm

3.2.9 Min Secondary Guide Rail Distance Below Primary Rails: 400 mm

3.2.10 Min/Max Width for Recessed Channel for Secondary Rails: 600/800 mm

3.2.11 Min Max Depth for Recessed Channel for Secondary Rails: 350/425 mm

3.2.12 Recessed Channel must run the entire length of the machine bed.

3.2.13 Must meet minimum requirements for alignment and accuracy characteristics, established by linear guide and gear rack supplier(s), for mounting and proper functionality.

3.3 Features

3.3.1 Primary linear motion guide rails with integrated linear absolute position scale incorporated into the rail. They must be equivalent to SCHNEEBERGER MONORAIL AMSABS-3L S 65-N. Bearing carriages must be of cylindrical roller bearing design.

3.3.2 Helical gear racks mounted and fastened to a precision ground or scraped surface to permit field replacement without additional grinding.

3.3.2.1 Primary Linear Axis

3.3.2.1.1 Module: 6 mm

3.3.2.1.2 Length: 16750 mm

3.3.2.1.3 Height: 59 mm

3.3.2.1.4 Width: 49 mm

3.3.2.2 Secondary Linear Axis

3.3.2.2.1 Module: 6 mm

3.3.2.2.2 Length: 16750 mm

3.3.2.2.3 Height: 59 mm

3.3.2.2.4 Width: 49 mm

3.3.3 Secondary linear motion guide rails with integrated linear absolute position scale incorporated into the rail. They must be equivalent to SCHNEEBERGER MONORAIL AMS Series size 45. Bearing carriages may be of cylindrical or ball roller bearing design.

3.3.4 Riser weldment for mounting the 3 or 4 Jaw chuck, rotating assembly, measurement device, and other accessories that will be provided by the customer. Riser dimensions (L x W x H) must be a minimum of 1250 x

900 x 560 mm. Must be able to handle the weight of the workpiece and operating loads from equipment to be attached to the base.

3.3.5 Locating and fastening points for accessory mounting, i.e. cable guides, HMI console, sensors, or scanners.

4.0 Installation

4.1 Work Performed by the Arsenal:

4.1.1 Site Designation: Upon receipt of the required installation and foundation drawings Watervliet Arsenal will designate an installation site and outline a general machine location on the shop floor. The Watervliet Arsenal will not perform any floor work or other work related to the machine except for ensuring the area where the machine will be installed is cleared.

4.1.2 Utilities: As needed, once the machine base is installed, positioned and rough leveled by the contractor or their designated rigging crew, Watervliet personnel will run utilities to a single first point of connection for electrical and a single first point of connection for compressed air.

4.2 Work Performed by the Contractor:

4.2.1 Site Preparation: Once an installation site is identified by Watervliet personnel and if required, a foundation is constructed, the contractor or their designated third party shall layout the machine.. Contractor shall also be responsible for securing wood block flooring and install any leveling pads necessary for installation.

4.2.2 Site Visit: A site visit to the Watervliet Arsenal is highly encouraged after contract award. The purpose of the visit is to observe the process and how a similar machine is currently used at the Arsenal, this will enable the machine to be constructed with the process in mind. It shall also allow the contractor to see the location of the machine and determine how to rig it into place.

4.2.3 Rigging: The contractor shall arrange for rigging services to off load the machine and contractor personnel shall be on site at Watervliet when the machine arrives and is off loaded to supervise the placement of the machine on the installation site by the rigging service.

4.2.4 Installation: Once the machine is positioned and rough leveled by the contractor, the contractor, through his own service personnel, shall be fully responsible for the startup and testing of the machine, conducting any acceptance tests specified, and performing the required onsite training.

5.0 Warranty

5.1 The Contractor shall offer a standard commercial warranty, including onsite service warranty on labor, parts, and materials for a minimum period of one (1) year from the date of installation. Additionally, the contractor shall provide application and technical support free of charge.
