About this file

This document is a Minimum Requirements Document (MRD) for a 10kW Amplifier System for the Radiofrequency Bioeffects Branch of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The MRD specifies the system must operate in the 1-6 GHz frequency range, provide a minimum of 8-10kW of continuous wave power, and have capabilities for various modulation types, pulse repetition frequencies, and pulse widths. The system must interface with the facility's 480V 3-phase or 208V 3-phase power and cooling infrastructure. This is a Sources Sought/Request for Information notice, not a solicitation, to allow the government to assess industry's capability to meet the requirements outlined in the attached draft MRD. Interested parties are requested to submit their company information, relevant experience, technical specifications, and any risks or unknowns by November 25, 2024. The government will use the responses to inform the acquisition strategy for a future procurement.

Minimum Requirements Document

Amplifier System

Document Date: 14 November 2024

Background & Scope: 711 HPW/RHDR currently requires equipment capable of providing high peak power continuous and pulsed microwaves. The equipment presently utilized in high peak power pulsed microwave research at 711 HPW/RHDR has far surpassed its projected lifespan and replacement parts are obsolete. Constant transmitter failure is causing significant research delays and replacing the equipment is the only solution for 711 HPW/RHDR to continue to meet mission bioeffects research requirements. The required amplifier system will replace the capabilities of the current amplifier, but also enhance the peak output power, pulse repetition rate, and pulse width capabilities. The new amplifier system must meet stated minimum requirements (preferably the desired specifications as well), while also being compatible with the input voltage and current available within the facility.

Requirements/Salient Characteristics:

The amplifier system must meet the following requirements:

• Minimum range: 1-6 GHz frequency

• Modulation: CW/AM/FM/PM capability

• Input Power: 1 dBm (< 10dBm – desired)

• Input connectors: SMA or N type

• Output Connectors: Appropriate for frequency and power, and readily adapts to highly directive antenna (ie Horn Antenna >15dBi)

• 50-ohm input/output impedance

• Communication: GPIB, ethernet, or USB

• Embedded control system – desired

• Internal monitoring: Forward power, Reverse power, Operating voltages, Operating currents, Faults – desired

• The unit includes a built-in directional coupler and is capable of accurate power metering within +/- 0.5 db

• Integrated sample ports for monitoring forward and reverse power

• Protection: Input overdrive, VSWR protection, Fault shutdown

• Continuous Wave Minimum Power Output (PSat): 8 kW - 10 kW frequency dependent (see

Figure 1)

• Manual Gain Control (MGC Mode), Automatic Gain Control (AGC), Automatic level control

(ALC)

• Minimum PRF: 500 kHz (500 kHz - 1 MHz – desired)

• Minimum Pulse Width: < 1 µs

• Rise time and fall time < 100 ns – desired

• Input Voltage 480V 3 or 208V 3 available in facility

• Input Current: 150A available in facility

• Cooling: water cooled – 55°F water cooling loop available in facility

• Delivery 18 Months ADC – desired
