About this file
This document is a Minimum Requirements Document for a 10 kW amplifier system required by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for the Radiofrequency Bioeffects Branch (711th HPW/RHDR) at JBSA/Fort Sam Houston, TX.
The key requirements include: frequency range of 1-6 GHz (minimum 2-4 GHz), CW/AM/FM/PM modulation capability, 1 dBm input power (< 10 dBm desired), SMA or N-type input connectors, waveguide output connectors, 50-ohm impedance, communication interfaces, embedded control system, internal monitoring, built-in directional coupler, protection features, minimum 5 kW power output (5-10 kW desired), pulse repetition rate of 500 kHz (500 kHz - 1 MHz desired), pulse width < 1 μs, and 480V 3-phase or 208V 3-phase input power capability. The desired delivery time is 18 months after award. This is a Sources Sought/Request for Information notice, not an actual solicitation. Interested small businesses are requested to respond by 25 November 2024 to allow the government to assess market capabilities.

Amplifier System
Document Date: 15 JULY 2024
Background & Scope: 711 HPW/RHDR currently looking to acquire equipment capable of providing high peak power continuous and pulsed microwaves. The equipment presently utilized in high peak power pulsed microwave research at 711 HPW/RHDR is 50+ years old and has far surpassed its projected lifespan, and the parts required to replace the failing equipment are no longer being manufactured. The constant transmitter failure is causing significant research delays, and replacing the equipment is the only solution for 711 HPW/RHDR to continue to meet their mission of providing high peak power radiofrequency bioeffects research. The proposed amplifier system not only replaces the capabilities of the current amplifier but also enhances the peak output power, pulse repetition rate, and pulse width capabilities are enhanced. The new amplifier system must meet the requirements and ideally meet the desired specifications listed below, in addition to being compatible with the input voltage and current available within the facility.
Requirements/Salient Characteristics:
The amplifier system must meet the following requirements:
• Minimum range: 2-4 GHz frequency (1-6 GHz frequency – desired)
• Modulation: CW/AM/FM/PM capability
• Input Power: 1 dBm (< 10dBm – desired)
• Input connectors: SMA or N type
• Output Connectors: Waveguide per frequency requirements
• 50-ohm input/output impedance
• Communication: GPIB, ethernet, or USB
• Embedded control system – desired
• Internal monitoring: Forward power, Reverse power, Operating voltages, Operating currents, Faults – desired
• The unit includes a built-in directional coupler and is capable of accurate power metering within +/- 0.5 db
• Integrated sample ports for monitoring forward and reverse power
• Protection: Input overdrive, VSWR protection, Fault shutdown
• Minimum Power Output (PSat): 5 kW (5 kW - 10 kW – desired)
• Manual Gain Control (MGC Mode), Automatic Gain Control (AGC), Automatic level control
(ALC)
• Minimum PRF: 500 kHz (500 kHz - 1 MHz – desired)
• Minimum Pulse Width: < 1 µs
• Rise time and fall time < 100 ns – desired
• Input Voltage 480V 3φ or 208V 3φ available in facility
• Input Current: 150A available in facility
• Cooling: water or air (water – desired)
• Delivery 18 Months ADC – desired
