About this file

This is a technical specification document for the manufacturing and finishing of fiberglass reinforced plastic (GRP) cable trays, specifically component H7376007-014. The document establishes comprehensive requirements for fiberglass damage repair, material inspection, and fabrication standards. All fiberglass surfaces must be sealed with resin compatible with the laminating resin, and damage including peeling, blistering, chipping, or delamination must be repaired to specification. The fabrication must follow a specific four-ply warp orientation (0, +45, 90, and -45 degrees) to ensure structural integrity. All laminates require ultrasonic (UT) and visual (VT) inspection per NAVSHIPS 250-346-2, with 100 percent material inspection mandatory. UT acceptance criteria allow no void or delamination indication exceeding a 1/6 inch diameter flat bottom hole reference, while VT criteria permit no surface defects exceeding 0.05 inches in depth or height.

Material property validation requires concurrent test panels (minimum 24" x 36" x 0.25") for each resin batch used, tested in accordance with Electric Boat Specification 4941. Cured composite material must meet minimum requirements including 33,000 PSI tensile strength, 29,000 PSI compressive strength, 6,000 PSI inplane shear strength, 5,000 PSI interlaminar shear strength, minimum 47 percent fiber volume, less than 1 percent void content, and 1.78 specific gravity when tested in wet conditions. Surface finishing requires solvent cleaning with isopropanol, hand abrading with 80-grit paper or equivalent, and a multi-coat paint system: one coat MIL-DTL-24441 Type IV Formula 150 green primer (6 mils wet, 4 mils dry minimum), one coat Formula 151 Haze gray (6 mils wet minimum), and three coats BRA640 red antifouling paint (9 mils wet, 6 mils dry per coat minimum). All paint must cure for a minimum of 24 hours. Machined surfaces require 125 RA finish or smoother.

ERH737-60007a16 pc General Notes 7013 FOR MANUFACTURING OF H7376007-014, All notes shall be adhered to,

a. Fiberglass Damage: Fiberglass Painted surfaces shall be repaired when there is evidence of peeling, blistering, chipping, delamination, or severe scratching/gouging to the extent that the defect causes rupture of the sealer coating or exposure of bare fiberglass. See note 7013-b for materials used to fill and seal fiberglass surfaces.

b. Fiberglass Sealing and Repair; All surfaces including

7013 CONT’D

Machined surfaces, molded sides, cut edges, drilled holes or other abraded and exposed lamina surfaces shall be sealed with a coat of resin compatible with the laminating resin, Fiberglass repair shall be VIA a vendor submitted. Buyer approved repair procedure or VIA a procedure developed by electric boat 0341 composites engineers.

c. The finished Laminates shall be UT and VT inspected in accordance with NAVSHIPS 250-346-2 or Equivalent. UT inspection shall be done prior to machining. VT inspection shall be done prior to and after machining but prior to painting.

UT acceptance criteria: no void or delamination indication shall exceed that of a 1/6 inch diameter flat bottom hole drilled half way through a reference block of similar thickness and composition. 100 percent of material to be inspected.

VT inspection criteria. There shall be no surface defects having a maximum depth or height of 0.05 inches on any surface, cracks, fractures, resin starved areas, or edge delamination’s are not allowed. All defects found shall be submitted for buyber approval.

d. ALL glass reinforced plastic parts shall be fabricated with the fabric warp alternating as follows (see detail 9-1-7E for tray orientation):

PLY 1 WARP 0 DEGREES

PLY 2 WAPR +45 DEGREES

PLY 3 WARP 90 DEGREES

PLY 4 WARP -45 DEGREES PRPEAT

E. Unless otherwise indicated, all machined GRP surfaces shall be 125 RA Finish or smoother, This note is continued on note 7014, 7014 This note is continuation of note 7013.

F. To Validate the material properties of the AS-Fabricated composite trays. A concurrent panel shall be laid up for each resin batch used to fabricate the trays. The concurrent panels shall be laid up using a 0 degree – 90 degree PLY orientation which shall be considered representative of the trays and shall be a minimum of 24” by 36” by 0.25”. The seller shall identify and provide record of which concurrent test panel represents which trays. The seller shall minimize the number of concurrent panels by fabricating as many trays as possible with common resin batches.

The concurrent panel cured laminate material properties identified below shall meet the requirements specified when tested in accordance with electric boat specification 4941 table 4. Material properties when tested in accordance with electric boat specification 4941 table 4, shall be documented on quality assurance forms and included in the end item data package. Material test requirements shall be documented in a test report and submitted for buyer approval.

Immersion specimens shall be held in room temperature distilled water unit testing.

Record of these tests shall be kept on file, at the seller’s facility. For all material used in the tray fabrication.

7015 Parts referencing this note shall be prepared and painted as follows:

A. Surface preparation: solvent clean parts in accordance with SSPC-SP1 using ISOPROPANOL. Hand abrade all surfaces to be painted with 80 grit paper or equivalent scotch-brite pad to de-gloss part and promote coating adhesion. Repeat solvent cleaning with clean cloths and ISOPROPANOL to remove any sanding dust, allow solvent to flash at least 30 minutes.

B. MIX. Apply and cure the paints in accordance with the manufacturer’s technical data sheets, except where noted.

C. Apply one (1) coat of MIL-DTL-24441 type IV formula 150 green primer (EBPN 50-02-8150B) AT 6 mils minimum wet file thickness (approximately 4 mils dry film thickness) on all surfaces of the parts.

D. Apply on (1) coat of MIL-DTL-24441 type IV formula 151 Haze gray (EBPN 50-02-81518) at 6 mile minimum wet film thickness, while this coat is still tacky (within approximately 15 minutes to 2 hours of application at 70 degrees F) proceed with application of the first coat of antifouling paint per next step, tacky is defined as the drying state when a fingertip pressed lightly against the film leaves only a slight impression and none of the file sticks to the finger. If the first coat of anti-fouling paint has not been applied while the formula 151 is still tacky. Allow additional 1-2 mile wet file thickness of MIL-DTL-24441 formula 150 to act as a ‘TACK COAT’ and ensure the first coat of antifouling paint is applied while this coat is still tacky.

E. Apply three (3) coats of BRA640 red antifouling paint [EBPN 21802258] SD as to achieve a minimum wet file thickness of 9 mile per coat (approximately 6 mils dry file thickness per coat) DN all surfaces of the parts, F. Allow paint to cure/dry for a minimum of 24 hours.
