About this file

This document details specifications for a Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) to Gaseous Nitrogen (GN2) system for the B.431 Cold Spray system at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. The system involves a 3,000-gallon bulk tank that will convert liquid nitrogen to gaseous nitrogen, with key specifications including a compressor inlet pressure range of 140-300 psig, average usage of 4 hours/day for 5 days/week, and an average gas flow rate of 45 SCFM (maximum 65 SCFM). Monthly gas usage is projected at an average of 216,000 SCF and a maximum of 390,000 SCF per month, with the longest recorded usage being 16 consecutive hours in one day.

The proposed LN2-GN2 system is designed to be simple, cost-effective, and easy to maintain, supplying the Cold Spray system with pressurized gaseous nitrogen on-demand from a nitrogen cylinder receiver bank. The system includes a bulk tank, vaporizer, air compressor, chiller, and a 16-pack crate of cylinders acting as a receiver. This documentation is part of solicitation SPMYM225Q2017 for an Industrial Gases IDIQ contract by the Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime, covering procurement for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, TRF Bangor, and Naval Station Everett.

Text version

What gas supply is needed for the 3,000 Gallon Bulk Tank? Liquid Nitrogen.

1. What is the gas use or application? Liquid N2 (LN2) would be vaporized into Gas N2 (GN2), pressurized, and routed/delivered to a N2 cylinder receiver bank. The N2 cylinder receiver bank would supply the B.431 Cold Spray system with pressurized GN2.

2. What gas pressure is required? Compressor Inlet Pressure Range: 140 – 300 psig.

(Compressor would pressurize GN2. Pressurized GN2 would fill the 2,015 PSI rated N2 cylinders. N2 cylinder receiver bank would supply Cold Spray system with N2 at a minimum of 1,000 PSI and a maximum of 2,500 PSI.)

3. What is the gas usage pattern?

Average: 4 hours/day 5 days/week 4 weeks/month Maximum: 5 hours/day 5 days/week 4 weeks/month

4. What is the required gas flow rate? Average: 45 SCFM Maximum: 65 SCFM

5. Is gas flow constant? No. The Cold Spray system would be supplied gas on-demand. Cold Spray GN2 usage, and therefore gas flow, is not constant and is determined by nozzle/part/job size & type. Cold Spray would pull GN2 from the N2 cylinder receiver bank which would activate the LN2-GN2 system for refills as needed.

If no, peak flow rate and time period

Maximum Flow Rate: 65 SCFM. ~Maximum Usage per Day: 5 hours/day. Longest NSY Recorded Usage in One (1) Day: 16 Consecutive Hours.

6. What is the monthly gas usage?

Average: 216,000 SCF/Mo. Maximum: 390,000 SCF/Mo.

7. Is any special equipment required? (i.e. gas mixer, sparger, etc)

LN2 vaporizer.

If new applications, describe the process and expected benefit of using gas.

The LN2-GN2 system is a new proposed system/design. The LN2 would be vaporized into GN2, compressed (pressurized), and routed/delivered to a N2 cylinder receiver bank. The Cold Spray system would be fed pressurized GN2 on-demand from the N2 cylinder receiver bank. The LN2-GN2 system is beneficial because, in comparison to alternative N2 supply systems, it is simple, cheap, and easy to maintain.
