SECTION 312000 - EARTH MOVING
1. GENERAL
RELATED DOCUMENTS
Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
SUMMARY
Section Includes: Excavating and filling for rough grading the Site, placement of conifer tree boles and placement of coir fabric. See drawings for clarification.
Bank Slope Grading:
Establish a 5’ to 10’ wide platform area just above the high-water mark designed to anchor tree boles.
Remove 1’ to 1 ½’ of topsoil from designated bank excavation area and stockpile at topsoil staging area for later use.
Pull remaining bank material from the designated bank excavation area to a rough 3:1 slope, permitting the 5’ to 10’ wide platform at the toe of the slope. Stockpile material at the designated sediment repository location.
Log Structure Placement:
Parallel Logs: Parallel logs shall be placed parallel to shoreline with 2’ to 3’ overlap and root wad end pointing in the westward direction. Non-root wad end shall be placed shoreward of next log. Parallel logs shall be placed 5’ to 10’ lakeward from the high-water mark (HWM). Top of parallel log shall be placed within 2” of the HWM.
Buried Logs: Buried logs shall be placed perpendicular to shoreline with root wad end pointing toward the lake. Spacing between the buried logs shall be 25’. Cut top end of logs before placement, leaving the desired 20’ on the root wad end. Bury top end of newly trimmed log 10’ in the shore. The root wad end of the buried logs shall be snuggly keyed on top of the overlapped portion of the parallel logs.
Coir Placement:
Lay coir 70 fabric lengthwise along shore at the edge of the high-water mark. Place topsoil on shore side half of coir to lift height of 1 ½’. Allow government workers time to spread seed on topsoil. Pull remaining unburied fabric over topsoil and anchor in place with fabric stakes.
Place topsoil over freshly created 3:1 slope at a lift height of 8” to 10”. Allow government workers time to spread seed on topsoil. Lay coir 40 fabric over entire 3:1 slope. Burry top edge of coir in 1’ to 2’ trench at top of slope. Anchor all other edges of coir in place with fabric stakes.
UNIT PRICES
Work of this Section is affected by unit prices for earth moving specified in Section 012200 "Unit Prices."
DEFINITIONS
Backfill: Soil material or controlled low-strength material used to fill an excavation.
Initial Backfill: Backfill placed beside and over pipe in a trench, including haunches to support sides of pipe.
Final Backfill: Backfill placed over initial backfill to fill a trench.
Excavation: Removal of material encountered above subgrade elevations and to lines and dimensions indicated.
FIELD CONDITIONS
Traffic: Minimize interference with adjoining roads, streets, walks, and other adjacent occupied or used facilities during earth-moving operations.
Do not close or obstruct streets, walks, or other adjacent occupied or used facilities without permission from Government.
Provide alternate routes around closed or obstructed traffic ways if required by Government.
Utility Locator Service: Notify “Call Before You Dig” for area where Project is located before beginning earth-moving operations.
PRODUCTS
CONTRATOR FUNISHED MATERIALS

1. EXECUTION
EXPLOSIVES
Explosives: Do not use explosives.
EXCAVATION, GENERAL
Unclassified Excavation: Excavate to subgrade elevations regardless of the character of surface and subsurface conditions encountered. Unclassified excavated materials may include rock, soil materials, and obstructions. No changes in the Contract Sum or the Contract Time will be authorized for rock excavation or removal of obstructions.
STORAGE OF SOIL MATERIALS
Stockpile borrow soil materials and excavated satisfactory soil materials without intermixing. Place, grade, and shape stockpiles to drain surface water. Cover to prevent windblown dust.
Stockpile soil materials away from edge of excavations.
BACKFILL
Place and compact backfill in excavations promptly.
Place backfill on subgrades free of mud, frost, snow, or ice.
GRADING
General: Uniformly grade areas to a smooth surface, free of irregular surface changes. Comply with compaction requirements and grade to cross sections, lines, and elevations indicated.
Provide a smooth transition between adjacent existing grades and new grades.
Cut out soft spots, fill low spots, and trim high spots to comply with required surface tolerances.
FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
Special Inspections: Government will engage a qualified special inspector to perform the following special inspections:
Determine prior to placement of fill that site has been prepared in compliance with requirements.
PROTECTION
Protecting Graded Areas: Protect newly graded areas from traffic, freezing, and erosion. Keep free of trash and debris.
Repair and reestablish grades to specified tolerances where completed or partially completed surfaces become eroded, rutted, settled, or where they lose compaction due to subsequent construction operations or weather conditions.
Scarify or remove and replace soil material to depth as directed by special inspector; reshape and recompact.
Where settling occurs before Project correction period elapses, remove finished surfacing, backfill with additional soil material, compact, and reconstruct surfacing.
Restore appearance, quality, and condition of finished surfacing to match adjacent work, and eliminate evidence of restoration to greatest extent possible.
