SCiO NIR (near‐infrared reflectance) upgrade for HarvestMaster H2 GrainGage weighing system

(H2 to H3 conversion)

Background and Scope Dr. Boehm, USDA‐ARS Research Geneticist (plants) stationed at Lincoln, NE and who runs an integrated and applied wheat breeding and genetics program at the Eastern Nebraska Research and Extension Center and the Nebraska Agronomy Farm, requires the SCiO NIR upgrade for the existing HarvestMaster H2 GrainGage weighing system that is integrated to function with the existing Zurn 150 plot combine.

The Zurn 150 plot combine already has the HarvestMaster H2 GrainGage system, and the SCiO NIR is a specialized insert for the H2 system that will update it to H3 status. The SCiO NIR upgrade will provide near‐infrared reflectance data for protein on wheat grain for each plot harvested at time of harvest, complementing the other data points currently collected at time of harvest, which are moisture and test weight. This upgrade is needed for field‐based research and harvest of single plots, which are typically planted in randomized and replicated yield trials. Normally, NIR analyses are conducted postharvest, requiring a lot of time and labor to subsample grain from each harvested plot and run separate NIR analyses on each one. This endeavor requires much time and labor and is prone to human errors.

Obtaining NIR data for protein at time of harvest will save much time and costs associated with labor and will enable Dr. Boehm to make swift breeder decisions for selection of wheat breeding germplasm with high levels of seed protein. We have researched our specific needs and find that the SCiO NIR is a very specialized upgrade manufactured specifically for the existing H2 HarvestMaster GrainGage system already in place on the Zurn 150 plot combine. No other NIR system on the market is manufactured to be installed directly within the test chamber of our existing H2 GrainGage weighing system. This is a specialized NIR H3 upgrade for the existing H2 system.

Applicable Documents and Standards Contractor must warranty the proper function, parts, software, and workmanship of the robotic microfluidic liquid handler for 1 year as part of the initial purchase price.

Requirements The new NIR system:

1. MUST be able to be installed directly into the test chamber of the existing HarvestMaster H2

GrainGage weighing system on the Zurn 150 plot combine

2. MUST provide accurate moisture, protein, and oil predictions for each harvested plot at the time of harvest

3. MUST work seamlessly with the existing H2 GrainGage system and provide Slope and Motion compensation, strip mode, and the test weight measurement sequence for each harvested plot

4. MUST include out of the box calibrations for wheat grain

5. MUST provide wheat grain moisture measurements in the range of 7‐18%

6. MUST provide wheat grain protein measurements in the range of 8‐18% on a 12% moisture basis

7. MUST have a specially designed glass dome structure inside the H2 test chamber to house the

SCiO spectrometer

8. MUST work for on‐combine analysis for the Zurn150

Testing and Verification Must come with out of the box calibrations for hard red winter and hard white winter wheat grain. Must have updated calibrations for 2022 from more than 1000 processed wheat samples.

Government Furnished Property None.

Data Requirements Required documentation must include operation manual, software manual, software installation procedures. Required software for operation must be included with the existing Mirus Harvest Software.

Packaging and Shipping All packaging, shipping, and shipping‐insurance costs must be included with purchase price.
