About this file

This specification document outlines requirements for a large bed compression testing machine for the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Materials division, procured through the BidBuy vendor portal. The machine must be capable of testing plastic pipes ranging from 4 to 60 inches in diameter and must meet compression testing standards for stiffness and flattening requirements outlined in AASHTO M252, AASHTO M294, ASTM F949, ASTM D3034, and American Water Works Association specifications. The equipment specifications include a constant rate-of-crosshead movement compression testing machine meeting ASTM D2412 and ASTM D695 requirements, with compression capability at 0.50±0.02 inches (12.5±0.5 mm) per minute for stiffness testing and segmented capability for accelerated flattening testing on single specimens. The machine must include software and computer components as necessary.

The compression testing machine must have a frame capacity of maximum 300 kilonewtons with crosshead speed capability of 0.05 to 500 millimeters per minute and minimum crosshead travel of 1,600 millimeters. Loading plates must be sufficiently thick to prevent deformation during testing, with length equal to or exceeding specimen length and width not less than pipe contact width at maximum deflection plus six inches. The machine shall operate on standard 120V or 220V power supply with stroke resolution of 0.001 millimeters and load measurement accuracy of 0.5 percent of reading down to one-one-thousandth of load cell capacity. This is a rebid procurement opportunity open to all qualified vendors.

Text version

Specifications for Large bed compression machine for plastic pipe Purpose: To replace an outdated testing machine to the new building that meets material testing Stiffness and Flattening requirements for AASHTO M252, AASHTO M294, ASTM F949, ASTM D3034 and American Water Works Association PVC pipes.

General Requirements:

Testing machineA properly calibrated compression testing machine capable of constant rate-of-crosshead movement type meeting the requirements of Test Method ASTM D2412 and ASTM D695.
Machine software and computer, if required, shall be included
Rate of Head ApproachMachine shall be capable of compressing pipe at a rate of 0.5±0.02 in. (12.5±0.5 mm)/min for product stiffness and capable of segmented tests to increase head speed for flattening testing on a single specimen.
Specimen SizesMachine shall be capable of testing 4-60in plastic pipe for stiffness and flattening
Loading platesThickness of plates shall be sufficient so that no bending or deformation occurs during the test. Plate length shall equal or exceed the specimen length and plate width shall not be less that the pipe contact width at maximum pipe defection plus 6 in. Plates shall be large enough to conduct stiffness and flattening for all pipe specifications listed above, including up to 60” diameter pipe
Powerstandard 120V or 220V
Frame capacitymax 300 kN
Crosshead Speed0.05 to 500 mm/min
Crosshead travelmin 1600mm
Stroke Resolution0.001mm
Load Measurement Accuracy±0.5% of reading down to 1/1000 of load cell capacity
