About this file

This document includes a market research notice and technical specifications from the United States Department of Agriculture seeking precision technology halters. The Agricultural Research Service is conducting market research to identify sources for precision technology halters capable of measuring beef cattle grazing behavior through integrated tri-axial accelerometers and noseband pressure sensors. The halters must remotely monitor and log feeding behavior data including eating, rumination, drinking and mastication at a sampling rate of 10 Hz for at least one month. Interested parties should respond by March 22, 2024 with capability statements and technical literature demonstrating their products meet the specifications. Responses will help determine whether future requirements should be set aside for small businesses or procured through full and open competition.

Attachment 1: Precision Technology Halters for Use in Grazing Beef Cattle

Product Precision technology halters for evaluating grazing behavior in beef cattle

Description Halter must include tri-axial accelerometer and noseband pressure sensor Hardware Must be halter. Not acceptable hardware: neck collar, ear tag, leg collar, etc.

Measurement Description

Automated, remote, monitoring halter system for cattle feeding behavior.

Required Measures All of the following measurement outputs are required: eating (head up and down differentiation), rumination, drinking, number of rumination boluses, rumination chews, number of mastication bites, number of prehensive bites, grazing bouts

Sensors Must include both a tri-axial accelerometer and noseband pressure sensor.

Data accessibility All raw data accessible via USB Resolution 10 Hz Accuracy Must have documented validation in the scientific literature with minimum accuracy consistently reported at ≥ 0.90 (or 90%).
