Statement of Objectives

Compacting Storage for Cumberland Island National Seashore (CUIS)

Mainland Museum Building (MMB)

Project Statement:

The current special configuration in the CUIS MMB is not adequate to meet the needs of growth to the CUIS collection. Contractor shall design, deliver, and install high-density mobile storage (aisle saver shelving). This will optimize our storage capacity in the current space for current storage needs and anticipated storage needs in the future.

Background:

The CUIS MMB stores the museum collections for Cumberland Island National Seashore. The building houses over 3000 objects including historic objects, archeological objects, natural history specimens, documents, maps, photographs and other multi-media formats. The building was constructed in 1998 and was purpose-built to house museum collections, as well as having a work space.

Description:

The MMB is approximately 4,300 square feet, located on the second floor of the Mainland Museum.

There is no loading dock, but tractor trailers may deliver pallets or boxes in front of building. There is a freight elevator to the second floor

The storage area is split into three areas. An office space, a large open storage located over the old footprint of the historic bank, and a smaller storage area located over the new construction section accessed thru one set of double interiors doors and a ramp. There are no windows in the facility and no exposed pipes or obstructions. The walls are drywall and floor is painted plywood (historic section) and concrete (new section).

We propose to install high density mobile shelving in approximately one-third of the space. The shelving will be used to hold oversized shelving for furniture and larger household items. Existing shelving will be reused on new tracks. New static shelving will be installed in one-third of the space to hold archival boxes and archeological collections. The vast majority of the boxes are 13”w x 16”d x 11”h. Maximum size of boxes is 24” x 24” x 6”.

Door dimensions: 72” w x 83” h

Ceiling height: 116”

Note: A pre-bid site visit is strongly recommended. It is the contractor’s responsibility to verify all measurements, and to evaluate delivery and installation constraints.

Objectives:

Purchase high density mobile shelving units, including track, decking, mechanical assist (not powered) mobile carriages and shelving.

Track, decking and carriages must be ADA compliant.

Resin decking must be fire retardant.

Shelves must be powder coated steel, 22 gauge, and hold a minimum of 400 lbs. each.

Install 5 mobile carriages, each holding 192” long x 36” wide x 87” high shelving units. Units can either be 18” placed back to back, or be 36” deep.

All units shall contain eight shelves high, with at least 14” space between each shelf. Shelf height should be adjustable to allow for future changes.

The bottom shelves must be a minimum of 4” off the rails.

Each mobile carriage will have a 3-spoke handle to move the unit and must have safety lock or mechanism to keep carriage from moving inadvertently.

Floating aisle must be at least 36” and not more than 56” wide.

Minimum clearance from ceiling is 18” due to fire suppression system.

Exposed ends of units should be fully closed; inside frames or support may be open.

Design will allow for access to top of cabinets to allow for proper facility housecleaning.

Design will allow for future replacement of existing shelving as needed due to wear and age.

Provide detailed information about the composition of the materials to be used in the shelves, carriages, flooring, hardware, as well as any chemicals, paints or sealants, etc. for approval, to ensure they meet NPS and museum standards.

All material will be fully unpacked and installed, levelled and tested for functionality.

Packing materials must be properly recycled and disposed of in a contractor-provided dumpster.

All access to building must be coordinated with the Resource Manager.

Work must be performed Monday-Friday, 8:00a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Shipping must be included to St. Mary’s, Georgia Project will begin with at least a conference call no later than 10 days from award date between the contractor and the park.

Delivery and installation of shelving must begin after conference call and be completed within

120 days. Once installation begins, it must be completed within 2 weeks.

Should any damage occur to NPS property during the installation of the system, the contractor is responsible for repairing or replacing all damaged property.

Request for Proposals:

Please include description of carriages and shelving, including all dimensions and materials.

Please include floor plan of building showing location of units.

Please provide pricing information in a line-item format, including equipment, shipping, installation and disposal of waste.
