About this file

This Requirements Document outlines technical specifications for an industrial-grade additive manufacturing (3D printing) system for a government agency. The document details critical and desired features for a high-performance 3D printer, including a minimum build volume of 400mm x 400mm x 300mm, capability to print with carbon- and glass-fiber reinforced polymers, and support for flexible materials. Critical must-have features include large build volume, high-temperature nozzle (≥500°C), active chamber management, closed-loop precision motion control, and high throughput production (>1 kg/day).

The system requires compatibility with standard additive manufacturing workflows, ability to process various file formats (STL, OBJ, AMF, 3MF), and compliance with DoD cybersecurity requirements. Interoperability specifications include connectivity via common network protocols and capability to export production and maintenance logs. The requirements are brand-agnostic and designed to ensure fair competition while meeting government mission needs, allowing vendors to propose any system that meets or exceeds the detailed technical specifications.

Requirements Document – Additive Manufacturing System

Introduction This document defines the minimum technical and performance requirements for an industrial-grade additive manufacturing (3D printing) system. These specifications ensure fair competition while meeting Government mission needs.

Minimum Technical/Performance Requirements

- Build Volume: Minimum 400mm x 400mm x 300mm.

- Machine Dimensions: Approx. 750mm (H) x 670mm (W) x 830mm (D).

- Supported Materials: Must be capable of printing with carbon- and glass-fiber reinforced polymers (e.g., PA12-CF, PA12-GF, PETG-CF) as well as flexible materials.

- System Weight: Approx. 80–85 kg (175–185 lbs).

- Print Bed: Rigid aluminum tooling plate (or equivalent) with automated leveling capabilities.

- Production Speed: Capable of sustained high throughput printing (minimum 1 kg/day;

objective 2 kg/day).

- Motion System: Precision closed-loop servos or equivalent, achieving high accuracy and repeatability.

- Chamber Control: Actively managed heated and cooled chamber to ensure print stability across environmental conditions.

- Power: Standard 120V AC input, maximum draw ~1000W.

- Print Head: Capable of reaching up to 500°C nozzle temperature.

- Print Bed Temperature: Capable of heating to at least 130°C.

- Chamber Temperature: Capable of heating to at least 60°C.

- Resolution: Z resolution of 1.5 μm or better; X/Y resolution of 25 μm or better.

- Rapid Print Speed; max:1100 mm/s, continuous 1000 mm/s

-Print Speed; max: 500 mm/s, continuous: 300 mm/s

- Acceleration; max: 40,00mm/s² in X/Y axes, continuous: 10,00mm/s² in X/Y axes

-Volumetric Flow Rate @ 0.4mm nozzle; Max: 45mm3/s, continuous: 25 mm3/s

- User Interface: Touchscreen HMI with connectivity options including CANBUS, Wi-Fi, and

USB.

- Maintenance: Designed for low-maintenance operation, targeting less than 1 hour per month during 24/7 production use.

- Durability: Rigid structural frame with metal enclosure capable of long service life under industrial production loads.

- Warranty: Minimum coverage for motion system, electronics, and manufacturer defects consistent with industry standards.

Critical vs. Desired Features Critical Must-Have Features:

• - Large build volume (≥ 400mm in any axis).

• - Ability to print with high-strength fiber-reinforced polymers.

• - Active chamber management (heating/cooling).

• - High temperature nozzle (≥ 500°C).

• - High bed temperature (≥ 130°C).

• - Closed-loop precision motion control.

• - High throughput (>1 kg/day production).

• - Industrial-grade durability and reliability.

Nice-to-Have Features:

• - Touchscreen HMI with multi-protocol connectivity (Wi-Fi, USB, CANBUS).

• - Extended maintenance intervals (≥ 10X industry average).

• - Low-cost consumables and spare parts.

• - Enterprise-level support packages with 24/7 availability.

• - Advanced monitoring (remote diagnostics, sensors, etc.).

Interoperability and Compatibility Requirements The system must be compatible with standard additive manufacturing workflows and Government-approved software environments. Requirements include:

- Ability to process standard AM file formats (e.g., STL, OBJ, AMF, 3MF).

- Connectivity via common network protocols for integration into enterprise systems.

- Compliance with DoD cybersecurity requirements when networked.

- Ability to export production and maintenance logs for Government oversight.

Conclusion This requirements document defines the salient technical characteristics necessary for a high-performance additive manufacturing solution, while remaining brand-agnostic in compliance with FAR 6.101 and FAR 11.105. Vendors may propose any system that meets or exceeds these specifications.
