About this file
This document is a Specifications document for a planter modification requirement issued by the USDA-ARS Cropping Systems and Water Quality Research Unit. The modification is needed to allow simultaneous application of two additional liquid fertilizer or biological products during the planting operation on the existing John Deere 1785 row-crop planter, which is already equipped with Precision Planting technology.
The key requirements include: ability to apply two separate liquid starter products in the seed furrow; compatibility with biological and chemical products; separate control of each product rate; rate control based on input of an external map; application on all 11 rows; compatibility with existing Precision Planting SmartFirmers; application rate range of 4.5 to 20 gallons/acre at 4.5 mph; recording of product flow data integrated with existing planter data. The modification must include a minimum 1-year warranty. This requirement is part of a Federal Contract Opportunity with Solicitation Number 12505B24Q0322 issued by the USDA Agricultural Research Service for components compatible with the John Deere 1785 planter. The acquisition is a 100% Small Business Set-Aside under NAICS code 333111, and will be awarded on a Lowest Price Technically Acceptable basis.

Planter Modification – Columbia, MO
Background
The USDA-ARS Cropping Systems and Water Quality Research Unit (CSWQRU) conducts precision cropping systems research at the field scale. A key part of the research is controlling application of inputs (e.g., seed, liquid fertilizer, crop protection chemicals) according to experimental protocols, which often include an application rate that varies from place to place within the field. Information regarding the (variable-rate) application must be recorded and mapped by tagging with GPS coordinates for subsequent analysis (as part of the process referred to as precision agriculture). Furthermore, control of the variable-rate application must be able to be controlled by inputting a map of target rates into the system on the field equipment (e.g., planter).
The CSWQRU currently owns a John Deere 1785 row-crop planter that has been modified with sensing and control technology from Precision Planting to measure soil properties at planting, and to control planter operation, seed delivery, and delivery of one liquid fertilizer product. Now, we require a modification to the Precision Planting system to allow simultaneous application of two additional fertilizer (or biological) products during the planting operation. Integration of data flow from this modification must be seamless with data from the already installed Precision Planting components. Specifically, the required planter modification must meet the characteristics given below.
Notes:
1. Components already on planter include a Precision Planting vApplyHD system with pump capacity to drive this proposed modification, Precision Planting SmartFirmers on six rows, and a Gen3 20/20 monitor.
2. Connection hoses and brackets, and fertilizer tank(s) will be provided by customer.
3. Customer will assemble system on the existing JD 1785 planter, i.e., requirement is for materials only, not installation.
Salient Characteristics of the system
• Provide the ability to apply two separate liquid starter products in the seed furrow.
• Compatible with biological products as well as chemical fertilizers.
• Each product rate can be controlled separately.
• Controlled rates can be varied from place to place within the field based on input of an external map of desired rates.
• System shall be capable of applying starter on all eleven rows (15 in. spacing) of the planter.
• Shall be compatible with Precision Planting SmartFirmers installed on six of the eleven rows or include replacement SmartFirmers if needed.
• Rate of each starter product must be controllable between 4.5 gallon/acre and 20 gallon/acre when travelling at 4.5 mile/hour.
• System provides ability to record flow of each product, tagged with geospatial data.
Data is integrated with other planter data in the existing Gen3 20/20 monitor for display and recording.
• Includes minimum 1-year warranty.
