About this file

This document is a specification for a muffle furnace required by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) for use in their laboratory. The key requirements include a heating volume larger than 8 L, a maximum internal temperature of at least 1800°C, 220V single-phase electrical connection, programmable temperature controller with at least 12 segments, an exhaust port, and an inert gas inlet. Additional accessories required include an inert gas inlet and a touchscreen programming interface. The furnace must have a minimum one-year warranty and be delivered within 30-60 days of award. This specification is attached to a federal contract opportunity solicitation with NAICS code 333994 and a small business size standard of 500 employees. The solicitation requests quotes for the muffle furnace, to be evaluated on a lowest-priced technically acceptable basis. Offerors must demonstrate technical capability, provide a firm-fixed-price quote, and comply with other administrative requirements.

Specifications: Muffle Furnace

□ BACKROUND – Calcined coke is a carbonaceous solid with high electrical conductivity and mechanical strength. Coal tar pitch is a carbonaceous solid material (>90 wt% carbon) that softens when heated above a particular temperature (termed the softening point). The aluminum manufacturing industry uses coal tar pitch, combined with calcined petroleum coke, to form anodes used for the production of aluminum metal. Optimal production of these anodes is critical for anode longevity, and high temperature heating control is critical to optimize anode properties. Our lab produces biorenewable versions of various petrochemicals, and carbonaceous solids fall under this category. The purpose of this purchase is to obtain equipment for heating and synthesizing calcined coke and coal tar pitch, which falls under our research objectives.
