About this file
This document is a Specification for ion/NEG Pumps to be purchased for the Proton Improvement Plan Phase II (PIP-II) superconducting linear accelerator project at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL).
The specification outlines the technical requirements for the ion/NEG pumps, including the specific SAES part numbers, and that the pumps and controllers must be new, not used. It also details the acceptance testing procedures, including inspection for damage, vacuum performance verification, and conditioning of the NEG pumps. Any nonconformances will be documented and addressed through FNAL's quality assurance process.
The related federal contract opportunity is a Request for Proposal (RFP#363079KMW) for the ion/NEG pumps described in the specification. The solicitation is being issued by the Department of Energy's FNAL facility. Offerors must submit proposals in response to the RFP to provide the required pumps.

1. INTRODUCTION
The PIP-II particle accelerator will be the new heart of Fermilab, featuring a brand-new, 800-MeV, leading-edge superconducting linear accelerator. Its high intensity proton beam will power a broad range of particle physics experiments for decades to come and maintain Fermilab’s leadership as one of the world’s premier particle physics laboratories. PIP-II will enable the most intense high-energy neutrino beam for the laboratory’s flagship project—the Long Baseline Neutrino Facility and Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (LBNF/DUNE).
2. SCOPE
This specification covers the combination ion/NEG pumps to be purchased for PIP-II. These devices were tested at the PIP-II Integrated Test stand (PIP2IT) to validate performance (mainly low-particulate behavior, ultimate pressure, communications, and reliability). This was a beamline built at CMTF for the purpose of testing beamline front end performance prior to building the full-scale PIP-II beamline.
Details of PIP2IT testing are outlined in the 2023 DOE review presentation PIP-II IPR Breakout – Vacuum Systems v2.pptx. Low particulate testing data is also available upon request.
3. REQUIREMENTS
The technical requirements for the ion/NEG pumps and their controllers are listed below. Any requested deviations shall be clearly indicated, discussed, and be subject to written approval by FNAL.
Pumps and other beamline components must be new (not used) to prevent contamination of the UHV/particle-free beamline.
The combination ion/NEG pump must meet the following specifications:
1. SAES NEXTorr Z 200 CR, part #5H0257
2. New (not used)
The ion pump controller must meet the following specification:
1. SAES SIP Power, part #3B0506
The NEG controller must meet the following specification:
1. SAES NEG POWER LP C2, part #3B0522
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory 5
3. DELIVERY AND ACCEPTABILITY TESTING
Acceptance Criteria are outlined in PIP-II-Doc-5709 PIP-II Vacuum Systems Quality Control Plan. For ion/NEG pumps, “Ion pumps shall be inspected for damage during shipping within 30 days of receipt and if accepted, will then be connected to a power supply, and verified for vacuum performance. This means it will pump down to its ultimate acceptable vacuum limit consistent with the manufacturer’s specifications.
Nonevaporable getter (NEG) pumps shall be visually inspected for damage upon arrival. Prior to assembly, each NEG shall be conditioned twice to ensure its ability to meet the manufacturer’s specifications for pressure.
If a pump is being placed in storage, it shall be returned to its shipping container to ensure protection from any damage or contamination.”
Regarding nonconformances, “Quality control nonconformances will be recorded as required by the PIP-II QA group. The corrective action for nonconformances will be determined in conjunction with the PIP-II QA group.
Nonconformances identified will be communicated and documented per the PIP-II Nonconformance Handling Procedure [12] and log [13]. All nonconformances identified shall be documented via a Discrepancy Report in the Vector database using guidance provided in [14]. A graded approach will be applied to address all nonconformances as defined in this document.”
