About this file

This is a Special Packaging Instruction (SPI) document for military preservation and packaging requirements for a Cylinder Assembly, Actuating, Linear component. The document specifies packaging standards to ensure proper protection during storage and shipment, with two packaging levels (Level A and Level B) available depending on operational requirements. Both levels utilize ASTM D6251 closure standards and follow Military Preservation IAW MIL-STD-2073 guidelines. The cylinder assembly must be cleaned and dried per MIL-STD-2073 specifications with no preservative application required. Container dimensions and specifications vary by level: Level A containers measure 42 inches in length, 18 1/2 inches in width, and 14 1/4 inches in depth with a gross capacity of 10.309 cubic feet; Level B containers are identical in dimension but accommodate only 116 cubic feet of capacity. The item weighs 55 pounds and has dimensions of 29 1/2 by 9 1/2 by 6 inches.

The packaging assembly requires fifteen component materials including steel strapping, cushioning foams (A-A-59135 Class 1 Grade A), reinforced tape, laminated sections using A-A-1936A Type II adhesive, wrapping material, wooden pallets and dunnage, and steel skids. All wooden components must comply with International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM No. 15) requirements, including use of debarked wood and heat treatment to 56 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes with ALSC accreditation marking. The document includes caution notices regarding packaging substitution flexibility, overseas shipment requirements, and specific assembly instructions for cushion configurations, reinforcement placement, and void filling to ensure snug positioning of the item within the container. The SPI was last revised in January 2018 with updated specifications and distribution limitations to Department of Defense and DOD contractors only.
