COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION

SOCKS, STRETCH TYPE (DRESS OR LINER)

The General Services Administration has authorized ths use of this commercial item description for all Federal agencies.

1. SCOPE. This commercial item description covers the requireinents for stretch type, ribbed knit, cottonfnylon, and polyester socks. The socks are intended for dress wear or as a liner in a sock system by personnel of the Department of Defense.

2. CLASSIFICATION. The socks shall be provide in the followinq types:

Type I ‘Type II

- Polyester/nylon/spandex or rubbar (Liner or Dress)

CHARACTERISTICS

3.1 Description.

3.1.1 Tvpe I. The socks shall be seamless, circular 1 X 1

mock’ or true rib knit, stretch type with a ribbed elastic top, fabricated on a 132-240 needle machine or a equivalent process, and suitable for dress wear.

3.1.2 Tvue II. The socks shall be circular knitted, witha

ribbed elastic top, a reciprocated heel and standard flat toe seam. The socks shall be knit on a 3-3/4 inch or 4 inch diameter, single or double cylinder, not less than 132 needles for appearance.

3.2 Material.

3.2.1 Tvue I. The socks shall be made of cotton yarn plied

with stretch nylon yarn, or cotton yarn plated with stretch nylon yarn. The plating will result in the cotton yarn dominating the inside of the sock.

3.2.2 TVP e II. The socks shall be made from 18/1 cc

tetra-channel polyester fiber combined with one end of 100-34 textured nylon or a fiber with comparable properties. The cuff shall be knitted with 120-180 denier spandex or 95-100 gage rubber, double wrapped with 1/40 denier multifilament flat nylon.

The total fiber percentages shall be a minimum of 78% polyester for coolness, a maximum of 2% spandex or rubber for fitness and if needed, the remaining fiber type shall be nylon.

3.3 Elastic tOD. The elastic top for the Type I sock shall

be a true 1 by 1 ribbed knit made with an. elastic yarn, or cotton yarn consisting of a spandex core with a stretch type inner and outer cover, and finished with a turn-over, non-raveling welt, and free from loose ends. The elastic top for the Type 11 socks is a 2 inch 1 X 1 mock or true rib knit by 3-1/2 inches wide.

3.4 m, The color of the Type I and II socks shall be black as specified.

3.5 Sizes and measurements. The finished socks shall

conform to the sizes below as identify by National Association Of Hosiery Manufactures (NAHM).

3.5.1 Stretch and Weiqht. The finished socks shall conform

to the stretch and weight requirements listed in Tables I and II.

Extra-extra-small, Extra-small, Small, Medium and Large may be abbreviated to XXSM, XSM, SM, MED, LG.

~~ The length is the measured distance heel to the top of the sock.

J/ The measurement of the relaxed foot a straight line from the tip of the toe from the bottom of the length shall be taken in to the back of the heel alonq a-straight line through the tip of the toe and the bottom of tie heel gore. I

A/ The measurement of the stretched foot length shall be taken from the tip of the toe to the lower end of the heel gore, holding the sock firmly between the thumb and the finger at the toe tip and at the heel gore, and stretching the fabric to its limit.

3.6 B~ strenath (Tvue I and 11). The leg material of

the flmrshed ~a-l-~~kl–bu ‘~~o~ less than 85 pounds when tested in accordance with ASTM D3787.

3.7 Labellmarkinq. Each sock shall have a size marking

applied just below the instep and centered between the ankle and toe. The color of the marking shall be white. Each pair of socks shall have a commercial-type label.containing the contractor’s namer contract number and National Stock Number

(NSN) .

3.7.1 Washinq instructions. Each pair of socks shall

contain the following washing instructions: Machine wash, warm water, no- softener either in washer or dryer. TumMe dry warm.

3.7.2” Label/taq. Each pair shall have a printed bar code or a bar code label attached to each item, clearly legible and readable by a scanner. The bar coding element shall be a 13 digit national stock number (NSN). The bar code type shall be a medium to high code density and ehall be located so that it is completely visible on the item when it is folded andlor packaged as specified and so that it causes.no damaqe to the item.

4. REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS. The offerorlcontractor is encouraged to use recovered materials to the maximum extent practicable, in accordance with paragraph 23.403 of the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR).

5. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS

5.1 Product conformance. The products provided shall meet

the salient characteristics of this commercial item description and conforms to the producers standards and quality assurance practices, and be the same product offered for sale in the commercial market. The Government reserves the right to require proof of euch conformance.

5.2 Visual examination. Each sock shall be examined for the

defects listed below:

Defects. Any hole, cut, or tear; any degree of degradation of the elastic top; any thin areas, mends, frayed, or raveled; color shall not have a heather effect; noticeable variation in shade between two socks of a pair; noticeable variation in size (length and width) in a pair; knit construction of sock not as specified;

any spot or stain (outside) ; any run or drop stitches, including holes loopingor seaming; any material defects, distorted parts or poor workmanship; any component part omitted; marking missing, incorrect, or illegible; measurement of item not as specified;

bar code omitted or not readable by scanner; human-readable interpretation (HRI) omitted or illegible; bar code not visible on folded, packaged item; bar code causes damage to the item; any i=ems not pac~age”d-=cordmce WJ.L1 t the~*~ha=~--order.

5.3 Acceptance criteria.” Acceptance criteria shall be as

specified in the contract or purchase order.

6. PACRAGING. The preservation, packing, and marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.
