About this file

This document specifies technical requirements for gel packs used in temperature-controlled shipping applications.

The gel packs must feature a minimum 4.1 mil polyethylene outer pouch that is puncture resistant. The gel formulation shall be non-toxic, non-hazardous, and biodegradable, with a 32°F (0°C) freezing point. The primary gel composition includes saline solution, Liquisorb, H2O, and Bioside, though equivalent formulations meeting identical thermal performance specifications are acceptable. Packs must be capable of chilling to 40°F (4°C) or freezing to 1°F (-17°C) for a minimum of 24 hours prior to use, with the capability to remain refrigerated or frozen for at least 30 days for large quantity orders. The packs are required to maintain cargo area temperatures between 36°F and 46°F (2°C to 8°C) for standard refrigerated applications or between -4°F and 46°F (-20°C to 8°C) for frozen applications for a continuous 72-hour period during shipment.

2. Gel characteristics shall be non-toxic, non-hazardous, biodegradable 32°F (0°C) gel formulation. The gel solution is basically a saline solution with Liquisorb, H2O and Bioside as the main ingredients. Equivalent gel formulations shall have the same thermal performance as the listed brands.

3. Packs shall be capable of being refrigerated (chilled) to 40°F (4°C) or frozen to 1°F (-17°C) for at least 24 hours before use. For large quantities, the packs shall be capable of refrigerating or freezing at least 30 days prior to use.

4. Packs to maintain contents and container inner cargo area temperature of 36° to 46°F (2° to 8°C) or -4° to 46°F (-20° to 8°C), as applicable, for 72 hours during shipment.
