About this file
This Statement of Work (SOW) details the Bureau of Engraving and Printing's (BEP) requirement for Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) inventory spare parts support for the Super Simultan (SUSI) Press Equipment. The contract is an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) with one base year and four 12-month ordering periods, totaling 60 months. The primary objective is to procure over 800 highly specialized, proprietary spare parts for the SUSI Press, one of six pieces of equipment used in U.S. currency manufacturing.
The contract will be awarded sole-source to Koenig & Bauer Banknote Solutions (KBA), the original equipment manufacturer, due to the unique and scarce nature of the spare parts. Delivery locations include the Washington, DC Currency Facility and the Fort Worth, TX Western Currency Facility. Key contract requirements include providing comprehensive documentation, a one-year warranty covering parts and labor, biweekly status reporting, and adherence to strict security protocols. The parts are critical to maintaining the BEP's currency production infrastructure, with the contractor required to meet or exceed technical specifications for each spare part.

Statement of Work Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Inventory Spare Parts Support
For the SUper SImultan (SUSI) Press Equipment (Use Code P81)
SECTION I: Background
Koenig & Bauer Banknote Solutions (KBA) is the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) of the SUSI Press equipment, one of the six (6) pieces of equipment used by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) for currency manufacturing. This equipment has over 800 spare parts required for continuous operation and maintenance.
The over 800 highly specialized spare parts required for the SUSI equipment are proprietary to KBA. Other vendors are authorized to sell or distribute these parts, but they would normally be sold at a higher price since these vendors would usually obtain the OEM parts from the original manufacturer, KBA, to resell/redistribute to their clients.
BEP Electrical and Mechanical personnel maintain the SUSI Press equipment. Older printing presses have been overhauled both mechanically and electronically. The electronic overhaul is crucial because relatively some systems are no longer available. The SUSI Press equipment is unique, and the spare parts for this equipment are gradually becoming scarce and have limited availability. Getting these OEM parts from other than the original manufacturer has proved to be a big challenge as the industry keeps changing, and these parts are no longer manufactured since equipment such as the SUSI does not have a steady market or has been replaced with a more advanced currency printing equipment and inspection system.
Furthermore, obtaining original spare parts for these machines can be challenging, if not impossible, as the implications of modifying a machine can be unpredictable.
In order for the BEP to maintain continuity in operation, spare parts must be purchased on a recurring basis and maintained at a sufficient inventory stock level to support this distinctive currency equipment, which supports BEP’s complex, highly integrated currency production infrastructure.
The SUSI Press equipment is an integral part of the BEP's mission-critical operations and is fundamental to ensuring the fidelity of currency manufacturing. The quality, legacy, and fidelity of these spare parts are critical to the equipment's operation. The BEP printing presses are essential to the BEP's mission of developing and producing United States currency notes that are trusted worldwide.
Historically, these spare parts have been purchased via sole source. The awardee that can provide the majority of the spare parts has been KBA, a large business. This vendor has been found technically acceptable to supply these spare parts to support uninterrupted currency manufacturing services and ensure continued daily currency manufacturing operations.
