Scope of Work The scope of work to be performed by the vendor consists of producing:

· Qty 2: 0.5 m, SCU 21 mm Period Magnet Cores.

Background The Advanced Photon Source (APS) superconducting undulators (SCUs) contain planar magnets. The magnet assemblies are the form around which APS winds superconducting wire to create a magnet. Magnet assemblies must be fabricated to exacting standards in order for a finished magnet to meet field strength and uniformity criteria. These standards are described in this statement of work and in the associated drawings and 3D CAD files

Critical Features of Concept Core Design Groove Dimensions and Tolerances:

1. GROOVE PERIOD 9.25 ı#ˇ 0.02 NO ACCUMULATION OF ERRORS.

1. GROOVE PERIOD 10.50 ±0.02 NO ACCUMULATION OF ERRORS.

Surface Finish:

The surface finish is critical on the groove wall and base, where the conductor will be in contact with the steel portion of the core.

Deliverables and Delivery Schedule The vendor will supply APS with QTY 2 magnets according to a delivery schedule to be agreed upon. The fabrication method shall be documented, and all material certifications will be presented to APS.

Production Schedule Vendor shall include a production/fabrication schedule for all work performed including milestones and intermediate process tasks, for example:

· Material orders

· Initial (rough) machining

· Stress anneal/relief

· Intermediate dimensional inspections

· Welding – if performed by vendor

· Leak checking

· Final machining/grinding

· Final dimensional/surface inspections

· Final cleaning/preparation for shipment

· Crating/packaging

Material Requirement Materials are indicated in the drawing package, but vendor must supply material certification for all material orders associated with this order.

3D CAD Model The 3D CAD models for the magnet assembly are based on a released 3D PTC Creo Parametric file version 4. The model is for REFERENCE ONLY. All dimensions extracted from the 3D CAD model must be verified against the drawing prior to beginning the manufacturing process. Any deviation from the geometry specified by the drawings will be grounds for component rejection unless agreed to by APS.

Deviations from Spec Any deviation from the print specification must be communicated via email to the APS Procurement Buyer and approved by the APS. Any proposed change must be documented and be approved by APS using a “Supplier Disposition Request” (SDR) before implementation. Any changes that will incur additional cost must be approved by the APS Procurement Buyer before proceeding with the change.

Hold points Vendor shall work with APS to implement hold points in the production schedule to permit APS on-site inspection and witness visits. APS reserves the right to visit the Vendor’s facility with one (1) business day’s prior notice.

Required hold points include:

· Visual inspection by ANL of component surface finishes

· Dimensional inspection

Surface Finish To insure against damage to the conductor during the process of winding the SCU magnet core, special attention to the surface finish, breaking of sharp corners, and deburring is required. The surface finish of the machined cores is called out on the drawings along with the requirement to break all sharp corners.

Heat treatment The heat treat process shall address annealing and provide the removal of internal stresses.

Shipping Proper packaging to ensure that deliverables are not damaged during shipment is the responsibility of the contractor.

All magnet cores should be properly packed before shipping. Magnet cores shall be fully assembled and packed in boxes and are to be properly braced within the boxes so that they will not shift or sustain damage during handling and shipping.

Damaged shipments are likely to be rejected by the ANL Receiving Department and be returned to the contractor. Packaging should be suitable for long-term storage of the controllers in a warehouse environment.

The magnet cores shall be covered to protect them from moisture and dust within the shipping boxes. Desiccant packs are highly recommended. No grease or oil is allowed.

Each shipment box shall be labeled on the outside with the information shown below:

• Recipient: Argonne National Laboratory, Advanced Photon Source Upgrade

• Address: 9700 S. Cass Avenue, Lemont, IL 60439

• Gross weight of each shipment box

• Conspicuous arrows to indicate its upright position

All items shall be shipped to Argonne National Laboratory or an offsite location to be specified by APS later.

Quality Assurance Requirements

The vendor shall be responsible for the following quality assurance requirements:

· Supplying the material certification as specified in the Material Requirement section of this SOW.

· Performing dimensional verification of the critical dimensions and tolerances identified on the drawings.

· Providing a measurement plan, measurement equipment list, and most recent calibration certificates.

· Check groove width dimension, 6.14 mm +.050/-0, with a go/no-go gauge or gauge block. A gauge block of dimension no less than 6.11 mm should slide in all grooves around the core. An example is shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2. An example gauge block measurement

Acceptance Requirements

· Vendor will meet quality assurance requirements in this SOW.

· Do not ship magnets before inspection reports have been reviewed and approved by ANL.

· If necessary, APS can virtually witness Factory Acceptance Testing.
