About this file
This statement of work outlines the technical requirements for a plot combine to be procured by the US Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Field Research Implementation and Information Delivery Midwest Area. The plot combine must have a minimum 70HP diesel engine meeting Tier 5 emissions standards, 40 bushel grain tank, 4-wheel drive, hydraulic steering, and insulated soundproof cabin with A/C and safety features. It requires a threshing cylinder diameter of at least 400mm that can adjust between 240-1680 RPM along with axial flow cleaning fans and pneumatic grain handling to minimize seed damage below 2.5%. The header must have a minimum 50" cutting width with adjustable reel speed and belt feeding system to separate plots. The combine needs a weighing system integrated into the tablet display to record weights and moisture from each plot along with sample collection capabilities. The selected contractor must deliver the plot combine within 6 months to the specified research center location.

Statement of Work (SOW) Project: Plot Combine
GENERAL INFORMATION
1.0 Scope of Work: Purpose is to procure a plot combine to be used in dry beans breeding and genetics field research. The equipment should be able to direct harvest dry beans from research plots and also serve as a stationary thresher. The plot combine should have a weighing system to capture and record seed weights and moisture of individual plots.
2.0 Background: SBRU routinely conducts field experiments and breeding nursery evaluations of multiple dry bean market classes including black, kidney, cranberry, and yellow. A plot combine is required to harvest seeds from these trials. One important consideration when harvesting dry beans from small plots is the need to avoid seed mixtures among plots. Seed quality and minimal damage to seeds coats is important since beans from these plots will be evaluated for their end‐use quality following harvest, gentle but efficient threshing is key. Additionally, since dry beans consist of multiple market classes, some of which can be direct harvested and others that must be pulled and threshed in a two‐step process, SBRU needs a combine that can also serve as a stationary thresher.
CONTRACTOR REQUIREMENTS
3.0 Technical Requirements/Tasks: Provide and deliver one plot combine with the following characteristics/capabilities:
Basic machine:
‐ Minimum 70HP diesel engine, water cooled, tier 5 emission standard ‐ Minimum 40bu Grain tank ‐ 4 wheel drive system ‐ Hydraulic power steering ‐ Underbody cover and side deflectors
Cabin:
‐ Cabin needs to be noise insulated and cannot exceed a noise level of 76db(A) during harvest ‐ Cabin needs to be tip over certified to provide additional operator safety (provide certificate) ‐ Cabin needs to include: A/C, heater, head lights, blinkers, height and inclination adjustable steering column, ‐ Spring mounted driver and operator seat ‐ Height and inclination adjustable steering column ‐ Automatic cycle management
Threshing and cleaning:
‐ able to thresh bean plants with green leaves and thick stems ‐ threshing cylinder speed must be adjustable between 240‐1680 rpm ‐ tangential threshing cylinder, diameter must be minimum 400mm ‐ axial flow cleaning fan blowers, adjustable on the color display and in the rear of the combine ‐ pneumatic grain feed system ‐ air foil separators for seed and air separation and additional sample cleaning ‐ setup to be able to operate as a stationary thresher ‐ minimal damage to dry bean seeds (less than 2.5%)
Header:
‐ multiple header options ‐ 50”cutting width ‐ Hydraulically adjustable reel speed. Reel speed must change automatically in relation to the combine ground speed during driving to ensure a continuous material flow.
‐ Belt feeding system to ensure seed purity between plots ‐ Belt speed needs to be adjustable from the cab ‐ Pneumatic clean out system for cleaning the header in between plots ‐ Header with belt feeder dismounting in less than 5min
Weighing and sampling:
‐ Weighing system to collect weight and moisture ‐ Must be able to calibrate weighing system in operating position ‐ Rugged tablet PC ‐ System needs to give feedback when it is safe to start harvesting the next plot ‐ Seed flow sensor controlled seed handling system for efficient cycle times (time controlled is not preferred) ‐ Adjustable sample volume ‐ Ability to bag the whole plot in the cab
