About this file

This Statement of Work (SOW) details Argonne National Laboratory's requirement for a gravimetric feeder for a rare earth oxide electrowinning cell in their metallic program. The feeder must dispense rare earth oxide at feed rates ranging from 245 to 3000 g/hr, with the ability to reach up to 30 kg/hr for 10-minute durations, and operate with digital remote start/stop capabilities. Key specifications include handling oxide materials with densities of 87-100 pounds per cubic foot, particle sizes of 2-10 microns, and a high angle of repose around 50 degrees, with a dispense precision of 0.5-1%.

The solicitation (5-B141-Q-00569-00) is issued by the Department of Energy Office of Science, with proposals due by 6/19/2025 at 12pm CST. The feeder will be installed in the 369 MERF Hibay facility and is expected to operate for five years, running 24 hours per day in campaigns up to 30 days long. Vendors must provide a UL-listed unit that can demonstrate the specified feed rates, with a preference for lighter units that can be easily relocated for future use in larger cells. Interested vendors are required to complete all sections of the ANL-70 form and contact bdearlo@anl.gov with any questions.

Abstract or description:

A gravimetric feeder is necessary to operate the rare earth oxide electrowinning cell for the metallic program. The feeder will dispense rare earth oxide to the feed chute that feeds the cell. Feed rate is 245 to 3000 g/hr with remote start stop and weight goal input and time or rate of addition to dispense a proscribe weight. The feed is a rare earth oxide with densities in range of 87 to 100 pound per cubic foot. With particle size of 2-10 microns. The feed has a high angle of repose of about 50 degrees.

The feeder is located indoors, with room temperature from 18 to 25 C, atmospheric pressure, not classified electrical as hazardous.

Background In the electrolysis of rare earth oxides in a fluoride bath. Oxides are fed to the cell in an impulse method. The average feed rate is about 245 grams per hour, however in the impulse mode the feeder will operate with an impulse of 3000 grams per hour for five minutes, other feed schedules will also be used, all on the similar vain of impulse.

Scope Purchase a feeder the can operate on feeds describe above, with impulse feed system. To make the unit more flexible the maximum charge rate should be able to reach about 30 kg/hr for 10 minutes duration. Changes in the internals of the feeder to meet this requirement is permitted.

Digital control of the start and stop of feeder so that it can be operated remotely, controlled by generation of signal based on electrolyzer performance. A prescribed weight will be generated by software or operator command from LabVIEW PLC or similar. Precision of dispense of the oxide is to be 0.5 to 1%. The process will operate 24 hours per day, for campaigns that can last 30 days.

Objectives Purchase feeder to meet these requirements. Easy of relocation of feeder, the feeder will be used for the larger cell at later date.
