Statement of Work: Spacecraft Cabin Ventilation Fan Prototype
April 22, 2021
1. Background NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) requires a vendor to fabricate two copies of a small (9” long by 4” diameter) axial fan designed for low noise.
Fan noise has been a significant problem for manned spaceflight. A prototype cabin ventilation fan has been aerodynamically designed by GRC for low noise and mechanically designed to include 3-D printing in metal as a manufacturing option. NASA GRC does not have the appropriate equipment for building this hardware, so an outside vendor is being sought.
2. Key Assumptions The design is not sensitive or proprietary. The hardware fabricated under this SOW will be used for ground testing, so no special spaceflight procedures need to be considered.
3. Vendor Responsibilities The vendor shall manufacture, assemble and deliver two copies of the fan model to NASA GRC. The criterial requirements of the fan model:
1) The fan model shall be manufactured in metal. Possible methods include laser sintering, investment casting or CNC machining.
2) The surface roughness of internal surfaces exposed to airflow shall target 64 μ-inch Ra or better, except for the rotor surfaces exposed to airflow which shall target 32 μ-inch Ra or better.
3) The vendor shall review the NASA GRC design for manufacturability and provide feedback prior to start of hardware fabrication.
4) The vendor shall provide assembled fan models, including fasteners, keyless bushing and the specified electric motor.
5) The vendor shall provide a report including photographs of the manufacturing process, geometry accuracy of the build, rotor tip clearance and measurement/estimate of the surface roughness achieved.
6) The vendor shall determine and document appropriate torque values for the fasteners used in assembling the fan model.
4. Buyer Responsibilities NASA GRC will provide a complete set of drawings and CAD files that will define the aerodynamic and mechanical design of the fan model. GRC will assume responsibility for the effectiveness of the design.
5. Schedule NASA GRC will provide approved drawings and CAD files to the vendor within two weeks of finalization of this contract.
The vendor shall review with NASA feedback on design manufacturability and their plan forward for fabrication within two weeks of receiving approved CAD drawings and models. The vendor shall inform NASA as to the status of the fabrication and assembly at a meeting to be scheduled approximately 4 weeks after finalization of this contract.
The vendor shall ship the two fan assemblies to NASA GRC within 12 weeks of finalization of this contract.
6. Project Completion Criteria The project will be deemed complete when the fan models and fabrication report has been received by
NASA.
