About this file

This Statement of Work (SOW) details NASA's requirement for an Agilent 8890/5977C Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) for the Planetary Environments Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The instrument will support critical research objectives, including analyzing planetary environments, conducting wet chemistry experiments for the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument, and supporting future mission concepts like the Enceladus Orbilander.

The SOW specifies detailed technical requirements for the GC-MS system, including a split/splitless injector capable of 100 psi, a multimodal inlet with N2 cooling, a programmable oven temperature range of +4 to 450°C, and specific mass spectrometry capabilities. The system must include a workstation with MassHunter and ChemStation software, installation kit, 1-year software updates, and familiarization training. Delivery is specified as 4 weeks after receipt of order (ARO), with installation at NASA Goddard in Greenbelt, Maryland, and the procurement is intended as a sole-source contract to Agilent Technologies Inc.

STATEMENT OF WORK

Agilent 8890/5977C Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer or Equivalent

1. Objective/Requirements

The Planetary Environments Laboratory, PEL (Code 699), studies the chemistry and astrobiology of the atmospheres and surfaces of planetary bodies and is a world-class developer of flight instrumentation (e.g., mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, pyrolysis) for the analysis of planetary environments. The PEL developed the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument suite onboard the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity rover that has been exploring Mars since 2012. SAM’s major capability is to perform gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis that can be coupled to pyrolysis oven. The pyrolysis oven that will be coupled to this instrument is a CDS Pyroprobe 6200, which requires a relatively high inlet pressure (100 psi+) to be able to sweep gas into a Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS). We require a GC-MS instrument that has the ability to control the inlet pressure of the GC-MS inlet prior to sending carrier gas into an external device such as the CDS Pyroprobe and returning to the inlet for split/splitless operations. This instrument will be used to conduct wet chemistry experiments that will inform on flight-critical conditions in the future for the SAM instruments, especially as it is continuing to explore Gale Crater on Mars. This instrument will also be used to support the development of science objectives for future mission concepts, such as for New Frontiers 5 and 6, or Flagship class missions including Enceladus Orbilander which has specifically recommended a GC-MS as a threshold payload. It will be used to support in situ planetary sampling and help address questions such as those outlined in the NASA’s “Origins, Worlds, and Life: A Decadal Strategy for Planetary Science and Astrobiology 2023-2032” (page 13-16), including “Determine the chemical composition and structural characteristics of organic compounds in both Europa’s and Enceladus’ oceans to understand organic synthesis,” and “Characterize organic molecules present on Mars for determination of type, distribution, and source of organic materials to understand organic synthesis there”. In addition, the device will be used to support many other research projects in PEL funded through NASA ROSES Programs, such as Habitable Worlds, Participating Scientist Program, and Exobiology.

2. Characteristics, Scope, and Specs

The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) system must be capable of analyzing liquid and gas samples that are introduced into an injector port, where mixtures are separated by as chromatography column prior to detection in the mass spectrometer.

The GC-MS must meet the following requirements:

The system will be delivered to the Planetary Environment Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and installed by a field technician.

The technician shall perform the necessary work to set up the system and connect it to the electrical and gas supplies in the laboratory.

The system shall come with an installation kit including leak detection fluid, swage-type fittings, copper tubing, syringes, screw-drivers and wrenches.

The system will contain a standard split/splitless injector capable of 100 psi and a Multimodal Inlet (MMI) injector capable of N2 cooling.

The GC oven shall be capable of programmable temperature range +4 above ambient to 450 °C with a rate of up to 75 °C/min.

The GC shall separate components with peak area repeatability of <0.5% RSD and retention time repeatability of <0.008%

The instrument shall provide a heated interface between the GC and the MS.

The MS shall have an InertPlus electron impact (EI) ionization source.

The MS shall use a quadrupole mass analyzer with a mass range of m/z 0.6-1091 and a scan speed of ≤ 20,000 Da/s The MS shall be supported by an oil-free diaphragm pump, and an internal

Turbomolecular pump.

A workstation shall be provided that communicates with the instrument via a Local Area

Network (LAN).

The workstation shall have an instrument control software that establishes the experimental protocol and sequences and instrumental methods, including parameters, diagnostics, maintenance, logs, and help screens.

The workstation shall have a data acquisition software that is capable of recording, storing, processing, and visualizing data collected on the instrument, etc.

The software provided shall be MassHunter and ChemStation (or Equivalent).

The system shall come with 1 year of software updates and phone assistance.

Familiarization training is required to train potential users of the instrument suite.

The vendor must have nationally recognized expertise with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry instrumentation and an established history of instrument support and service.
