About this file

The document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for a pre-figured mirror mount system for the 7-ID beamline at Argonne National Laboratory's Advanced Photon Source. The SOW specifies the vendor responsibilities, deliverables, technical specifications, and quality assurance requirements for the mirror mount system. Key details include:

The mirror mount system must provide pitch, roll, and vertical motion control for pre-figured mirrors, housed within a vacuum chamber capable of reaching 10^-6 Torr. Deliverables include the pre-figured mirror mounts, vacuum chamber, acceptance testing, and motor wiring. Technical specifications cover the mirror axis conventions, motor and encoder requirements, and vacuum chamber design. The vendor is required to perform comprehensive functional testing prior to delivery. Argonne National Laboratory has also issued a related federal contract opportunity, solicitation number 5-B175-Q-00111-00, for the 7-ID Pre-Figured Mirror Mount System, with a response due date of 11/18/2024.

Scope of Work

The Time-Resolved Research group of the APS requests bids for for a pre-figured mirror mount system for the 7-ID beamline at the APS. The Pre-figured mirror optics (from JTEC) will be supplied by APS. The pre-figured JTEC mirrors mounted in a vertical and horizontal format. with dedicated pitch, roll and vertical motion for each mount will be housed in a vacuum chamber with a capability to attain an ultimate vacuum of 10-6 Torr. The pitch-height actuators are designed such that the motion can be in closed loop with absolute encoding, using the Renishaw Resolute series of encoders. Provision is made to encode the pitch and vertical motion while manual X and Y translations adjustments are also provided.

The system’s motion-control system will feature well-functioning motors that are reliable and user-friendly in operation, and have appropriate resolution and repeatability. At time of installation, the system will meet the acceptance criteria defined in the “Acceptance” section below, although final specifications will be established at the Final Design Review.

Vendor Responsibilities

Vendor will fabricate, procure, and install the described system and will train APS staff on the use of the system during installation. The vendor will abide by all requirements of this SOW and additionally the requirements of the attached 407.

Deliverables

We expect the full unit been received in April, 2025. Any deliverable line item below that the vendor cannot provide either because of lack of capability or issues with meeting schedule shall be explicitly stated by the vendor in their bid.

Deliverables for the pre-figured mirror mount system for the 7-ID beamline at the

APS:

• Pre-figured mirror mount for HFM and VFM

• Vacuum specifications chamber

• Acceptance tests to vacuum proposal, plus mechanical motion tests

• Motor wiring terminated at the vacuum feedthrough

Technical Specifications

1. Pre-figured mirror mount for HFM and VFM Mirror pitch, roll and yaw are defined in this document relative to the optical normal as shown in Figure 1. Figure 2 shows an example CAD model of a such a mirror mount system for pre-figured mirrors.

Figure 1. Mirror axis and angle convention.

Figure 2. Example of a pre-figured mirror mount system.

Table 1. Motor specicication.

Table 2: Encoder specification.

2. Vacuum chamber specifications The pre-figured mirror mount system will be mounted inside a split aluminium vacuum chamber that is rated to at least 10-6 torr. The vacuum chamber is constructed from aluminium (BS 1470 5083 NE8 grade) consisting of multiple sections. The upper section carry the entrance & exit ports (KF seals as standard). This section can be removed for access to the mirror assembly without disturbing the mechanics or electrical wiringconsists of a pair of beamports, KF flanges and pumping port. The lower section which carries the electrical feed-throughs. The chamber houses a base plate that holds the mirror system. The vacuum chamber also contains two viewports.

The pumps, gauges and windows will be the responsibility of APS.

3. Acceptance tests to vacuum proposal, plus mechanical motion tests The pre-figured mirror mounts will be assembled and fully tested at the vendor site in the Certified clean room (Class 10000 or better. Prior to packing and shipping, a Test/Commissioning report will be completed for each axis of motion, including vacuum performance and drive test. Delivery will only occur when the customer is satisfied with the test report. The vendor will include dummy optics (aluminium blanks machined to the exact size of the optics to be commissioned). This is doubly advantageous as it permits integration and assembly to progress without any risk to actual costly optics and the exact methods and procedures of installation to be fully ascertained prior to installation of actual optics. The vendor will carry out comprehensive functional testing of each sub-system and will include the following:

• Driving & full characterisation of each motorised axis on all mirror mounts.

• Driving & full characterisation of each motorised axis on all linear actuators.

• Shakedown of all motorised axis & systems.

For angular tests, The vendor will use:

An laser autocollimator - accurate to 2μad over any 4mrad range of travel.

Autocollimator target mirrors will be mounted from the dummy mirrors to simulate real world behaviour of the final installed optics.

A digital clinometer - accurate to approximately 0.01mrad.

The integration work is then carried out on site.

Quality Assurance Requirements

The Assembly shall be provided in accordance with the quality requirements identified on the ANL-407 form included with the purchase order.
