Statement of Work (SOW) for Heifers for use in Laboratory Research
GENERAL INFORMATION
1.0 Scope of Work
Evaluation of bacterial genes required to establish infection in pregnant cattle after experimental infection. Purchase of 10 purebred Hereford breed female calves for use in ongoing experimental studies. Purchased animals will have sound legs, good eyes, and not demonstrate any signs of clinical illness.
2.0 Background
The mission of the National Animal Disease Center is to conduct research on diseases of livestock in the United States and pathogens that cause these diseases. Research objectives are approved in 5-year OSQR plans that undergo scientific review in accordance with congressional requirements. The Brucella OSQR plan includes characterization of bacterial genes required to establish infection in cattle. Procurement of heifers is needed for controlling breeding to have pregnant animals available for experimental infection at specific times. Animals used within the study have consistently been of Hereford breed to reduce the genetic variation due to breed and to allow direct comparison across planned related studies.
