Introduction NIH Central Utility Plant: The Central Utility Plant (CUP), located in Building 11, generates steam and chilled water for distribution to the buildings on the Bethesda Maryland campus. The continuous and efficient operation of the CUP is critical for the NIH mission.

The CUP includes a boiler plant with an installed maximum steam generating capacity of 800,000 pounds per hour of steam and a chilled water plant with an installed chilled water generating capacity of 60,000 tons of cooling.
