Introduction to Data Center & Infrastructure Engineering (DCIE)

The Data Center & Infrastructure Engineering (DCIE) team is VA’s internal resource supporting all aspects of the passive infrastructure in enterprise information technology (IT) telecommunications spaces, including computer rooms, telecommunications rooms, and the fiber optic and copper cable plants supporting them.

DCIE is a VA government entity, part of the Office of Information Technology (OIT), IT Operations & Services (ITOPS), Solution Delivery (SD). We are the Tier IV engineering subject matter experts available for consultation when there are questions about how to design, outfit, or operate the infrastructure that allows the OIT network to support VA customers. Our team of experts represent the four interlocking engineering disciplines in the telecommunications field: Telecommunications, Electrical, Architectural, and Mechanical (TEAM).

We perform three major functions:

• Design standardized telecommunications spaces and the supporting infrastructure

• Review and provide expert guidance in projects building, renovating, and replacing equipment in telecommunications spaces

• Establish enterprise standards and design templates for telecommunications spaces and infrastructure equipment

DCIE, as the lead group in the Enterprise Data Center Infrastructure Collaboration Team (EDICT), publishes and maintains standards and design templates for VA telecommunications spaces. The primary standard that DCIE is responsible for is the Infrastructure Standard for Telecommunications Spaces, based on consensus industry standards and best practices, tailored for the VA operating environment.

To ensure that VA projects meet the requirements of published VA standards, the DCIE team should be involved in the scope development, review, and approval of all project work that:

• Specifies or installs new IT passive infrastructure such as campus fiber backbone;

• Builds or interconnects new telecommunications spaces; or,

• Specifies lifecycle replacement of major infrastructure equipment (e.g. structured cabling systems, computer room air conditioning systems, UPS systems, and similar).

Whether the project is a $10,000 Non-Recurring Maintenance (NRM) or a $400M Major Construction effort, DCIE is a stakeholder organization representing OIT’s requirements.

We are looking forward to working with you to ensure the success of your facility’s projects and initiatives.
