About this file
The document is a Section 32 17 23 Pavement Markings specification for a federal contract opportunity. It specifies the requirements for all paint and reflective glass bead products to be used for pavement markings such as traffic lanes, parking bays, crosswalks, and other detail pavement markings. Key requirements include using water-based paint that meets Federal Spec. TTP1952 and glass beads that comply with Federal Spec. TTB1325. The paint and beads must be provided from a single manufacturer and production run. Application instructions are provided, including preparing the surface, applying the paint at a wet film thickness of 0.015 inches, and dispersing the glass beads at a rate of 6 pounds per gallon of paint. The document also outlines tolerances for the length and width of the pavement markings.
The related federal contract opportunity is a Request for Quote (RFQ) for Crosswalk and Parking Lot Striping at the Togus, Maine VA Medical Center. It is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) set-aside. Offerors should refer to the Scope of Work (SOW) and attached specifications for full requirements.

EXECUTION
PREPARATION
Examine and verify substrate suitability for product installation.
Allow new pavement surfaces to cure for period of minimum 14 days before application of marking materials.
Protect existing construction and completed work from damage.
Clean substrates. Remove contaminants capable of affecting subsequently installed product's performance.
Remove dust, dirt, and other granular surface deposits by sweeping, blowing with compressed air, rinsing with water, or combination of these methods.
Completely remove rubber deposits, existing paint markings, and other coatings adhering to pavement with scrapers, wire brushings, sandblasting, mechanical abrasion, or approved chemicals as directed by Contracting Officer's Representative.
Scrub affected areas with several applications of trisodium phosphate solution or other approved detergent or degreaser, and rinse thoroughly after each application, Where oil or grease are present on old pavements to be marked, .
After cleaning, seal oilsoaked areas with cut shellac to prevent bleeding through new paint.
Clean and dry surface before pavement marking. Do not begin any marking until Contracting Officer's Representative inspected surface and gives permission to proceed.
INSTALLATION - GENERAL

Remove and replace marking applied less than minimum material rates, deviates from true alignment, exceeds stipulated length and width tolerances, or shows light spots, faulty distribution of beads, smears, or other deficiencies or irregularities.
Remove marking by carefully controlled sandblasting, approved grinding equipment, or other approve method to prevent damage on applied surface.
DETAIL PAVEMENT MARKING APPLICATION
