PROGRAM BACKGROUND

Cadaver heads and necks and whole bodies are a critical teaching requirement for graduate medical education in ophthalmology, emergency medicine and orthopedics.

Recent advances in simulated fresh cadavers are promising but are not currently the standard in GME teaching. Providing these specimens allows the Army Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, General Surgery Physician Assistant (PA), General Surgery, Orthopedics PA and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents to participate in key teaching elements of the Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA)-Brooke Army Medical Center. This assists with Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accreditation of the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) Residency Program, provides the annual intern orientation cadaver lab that prepares incoming inexperienced physicians to perform the lifesaving emergency procedures required of them during clinical shifts. With this essential introductory training, interns will be prepared to complete medical procedures expected of them during patient care. Residents will be able to keep up and participate in key teaching elements of the academics and surgical skills in using cadavers, enhancing their education.

REQUIRED CAPABILITIES

The Government requires:

Ophthalmology: Twenty (20) total fresh head specimens – fifteen (15) heads with neck and brain (c-2, c-3) and (5) five heads with brains and vascular vein blue and artery red

Dermatology: fourteen (14) hands w/arms (pair) General Surgery & OB/GYN: sixteen (16) total whole-body – two (2) male and two (2) female per session x4 sessions General Surgery PA & Orthopedics PA: eight (8) total whole-body – two (2) whole-body per session x4 sessions.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS): two (2) whole-body and four (4) heads with neck

The intent of this Sources Sought is to assess the state-of-the art of the technology available in cadaver/cadaver parts that could be applied to meet this requirement.
