About this file
This is a Sources Sought Notice issued by the National Institute on Drug Addiction (NIDA) seeking information from potential vendors about their capability to provide a miniature two-photon microscope system for mice. The specific requirements include a lightweight, compact imaging system weighing approximately 2.5g and measuring 20 x 10 x 30 mm, capable of recording calcium-indicator activities of single neurons while mice are not restrained and engaging in tasks. The system should preferably be compatible with the current lab's Spectra-Physics Mai Tai HP laser and include installation and maintenance services.
Interested companies must submit a 5-page capability statement electronically to Polina Klimenkova at polina.klimenkova@nih.gov by July 7, 2025. The response must address each project requirement, include the company's total number of employees, any relevant GSA Schedule or government-wide acquisition contracts, and provide contact information. The document emphasizes that this is not a solicitation for proposals, but a market research effort to determine the availability of qualified domestic sources. The anticipated period of performance includes delivery within 3 months of order, with an extended warranty for maintenance service preferred.

SOURCES SOUGHT NOTICE
1. Solicitation Number: 75N95025Q00200
2. Title: Miniature two-photon microscope system for mice
3. Classification Code: 6640 - Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing
4. NAICS Code: 334516 (size 1000)
5. Description: This is a Sources Sought notice. This is NOT a solicitation for proposals, proposal abstracts, or quotations. The purpose of this notice is to obtain information regarding the availability and capability of all qualified sources to perform a potential requirement.
This notice is issued to help determine the availability of qualified companies technically capable of meeting the Government requirement and availability of domestic sources manufactured in the United States in sufficient and reasonably quantities and of a satisfactory quality to determine the method of acquisition. It is not to be construed as a commitment by the Government to issue a solicitation or ultimately award a contract.
Responses will not be considered as proposals or quotes. No award will be made as a result of this notice. The Government will NOT be responsible for any costs incurred by the respondents to this notice. This notice is strictly for research and information purposes only.
For equipment/supply requirements, responses must include the place of manufacturing (i.e. address if supply/equipment is a domestic end product and include country of manufacture). For equipment/supply requirements, small businesses must also address the size status of the manufacturer under the applicable NAICS code (i.e.
address Non-Manufacturer Rule).
Background: Drug addiction is a complex psychiatric condition that involves changes in behavior and brain function. Observation of single neuron activities provides valuable insights for understanding how the brain regulates behavior and produces disorders.
The project goal is to observe the activity of single neurons while the mouse engages in behavior. Relational analyses between neural activity and behavior provide insights into understanding how those neurons regulate certain aspects of behavior. The National Institute on Drug Addiction (NIDA), Neurocircuitry of Motivation Section currently has a two-photon microscope system for calcium imaging, which allows to observe calcium activity of single neurons. However, this system is designed to measure calcium activity of restraint mice as its microscope hardware weighs tens of pounds. To perform two-photon calcium imaging in freely moving mice, the Program needs a miniature system with which the mouse can wear and move freely.
Preferably, the new system should be compatible with the current lab laser (2-photon laser - Spectra-Physics Mai Tai HP with s/n 5192), eliminating the need to purchase another laser.
Purpose and Objectives: NIDA’s Neurocircuitry of Motivation Section, is seeking for a miniature two-photon microscope system for mice to record activities of single neurons in unrestraint conscious mice.
Project requirements: Imaging system should:
- Records calcium-indicator activities of single neurons and axonal and dendritic structures while mice are not restraint and engage in tasks.
- A light-weight and compact system is desired, approximately 2.5 g and approx.
20 x 10 x 30 mm in size.
- The offer should provide installation and maintenance services for the system.
Anticipated period of performance: Requested delivery within 3 months of order. The extended warranty for additional years of maintenance service is preferred.
Capability statement /information sought. Companies that believe they possess the capabilities to provide the required products and services should submit documentation of their ability to meet each of the project requirements to the Contracting Officer. The capability statement must specifically address each of the project requirements separately. Additionally, the capability statement should include 1) the total number of employees 2) any contractor GSA Schedule contracts and/or other government-wide acquisition contracts (GWACs) by which all of the requirements may be met, if applicable, and 4) any other information considered relevant to this program. Capability statements must also include the Company Name, Unique Entity ID from SAM.gov, Physical Address, and Point of Contact Information. The response must include the respondents’ technical and administrative points of contact, including names, titles, addresses, telephone, and e-mail addresses.
Interested companies are required to identify their type of business, applicable North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Code, and size standards in accordance with the Small Business Administration. The government requests that no proprietary or confidential business data be submitted in a response to this notice.
However, responses that indicate the information therein is proprietary will be properly safeguarded for Government use only. Capability statements must include the name and telephone number of a point of contact having authority and knowledge to discuss responses with Government representatives. Capability statements in response to this market survey that do not provide sufficient information for evaluation will be considered non-responsive. When submitting this information, please reference the solicitation notice number.
The response is limited to 5-page limit. The 5-page limit does not include the cover page, executive summary, or references, if requested.
The response must include the respondents’ technical and administrative points of contact, including names, titles, addresses, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail addresses.
All responses to this notice must be submitted electronically to the Contract Specialist/Contracting Officer. The response must be submitted to Polina Klimenkova at e-mail address polina.klimenkova@nih.gov. The response must be received on or before July 7, 2025.
