About this file
This is a Statement of Need issued by the National Institute on Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) and its Center for Biomedical Engineering and Technology Acceleration (BETA Center) within the Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health.
NIBIB and the BETA Center require renewed licenses for Mimics 3D medical image segmentation software, manufactured by Materialise USA LLC, as current licenses expire September 21, 2026. The Mimics software is essential for analyzing data from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and micro computed tomography (microCT) systems. The software produces quantifiable 3D renderings from MRI and microCT medical image data (DICOM files) and features automatic and smart editing tools that enable effective segmentation of 3D images and creation of accurate 3D models. These models support 3D analysis, finite element meshing for blood flow simulation, and 3D printing applications. Failure to renew the licenses would result in significant loss of investment across multiple research projects critical to the BETA Center's operations.

Statement of Need
Mimics 3D Medical Image Segmentation Software
The National Institute on Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) and Center for Biomedical Engineering and Technology Acceleration (BETA Center) currently use a specialized scientific software – Mimics, manufactured by Materialise USA LLC– in order to analyze data produced by magnetic tomography resonance (MRI) and micro computed tomography (microCT) system. The current licenses for this software will expire 9/21/26, so we require renewed licenses in order continue these analyses. The Mimics software produces a quantifiable 3D rendering from MRI and microCT medical image data (dicom) files. Mimics software has automatic and smart editing tool features that make segmentation of 3D images effectively and create accurate 3D models. These models will be used for 3D analysis, finite element meshing in order to simulate blood flow and 3D printing of the model. Failure to renew the licenses for this system will result in a significant loss in investment in several research projects critical to the BETA Center.
