1.2 BACKGROUND The ANSDB facility lies along the banks of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal which is part of the Chicago Waterway system. The Barriers were constructed to prevent the movement of invasive species, such as Asian Carp, between the Mississippi River and Great Lakes basins.

1.2.1 FACILITIES The Dispersal Barriers consist of Permanent Barrier I (PB1), Control Gear Backup Power Building (CGBP), Barrier IIA (IIA), Power Quality Building (PQ), Demo Barrier (Demo), Barrier IIB (IIB), and Parallel Gear Building (PG) and are located at 790 East Old Romeo Road, in Lockport, Illinois, 60441, accessed from the 135th Street bridge’s northeast exit, westward under the bridge and over the BNSF railroad crossing, north along the roadway between the Chicago Sanitary Shipping Canal (CSSC) and the BNSF rails.

The DPRB fence runs north/south along the Centennial Trail beginning at 135th Street for approximately 13 miles. The fence serves as a barrier between the Des Plaines River and the CSSC and is essential to control movement of invasive species.

1.2.3 The items listed in the paragraphs above are the major features of the Dispersal Barriers facility.

Other major assets include seven (7) stand-alone diesel generators with enclosures, two (2) high mast lights, electrical/parasitic switches, security fencing throughout, Closed Circuit Television System (CCTV), communication and electrical duct banks, sidewalk with fiberglass railings, electrical substations, and ComEd substations and transformers.
