May, 2012 USAID’s program in nutrition is targeted at women, children under two and People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV). Through a multi‐pronged approach, USAID seeks to improve the nutritional status through the diversification of diets with high quality food products, promotion of appropriate care and feeding practices, and the diversification and smoothing of household income.
National level:
As the donor convener for the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) movement in Ghana, USAID plays a leadership role amongst development partners and between development partners and the Ministry of Health to ensure a coordinated, evidence‐based approach;
Support policy and advocacy efforts to raise awareness, increase commitment and mobilize nutrition‐oriented resources;
Support the Ministry of Health/ Ghana Health Service to scale up Community based Management of Acute Malnutrition
(CMAM) and Nutrition, Assessment and Counseling Support
(NACS) services for people living with HIV/AIDS;
Strengthening leadership, skills and competencies in the delivery of nutrition and HIV/AIDS services;
Increase the evidence base regarding the determinants of anemia through collaborative research opportunities with national and international research centers of excellence.
Support social and behavior change communication for infant and young child feeding campaign.
Pioneer innovative technology to efficiently and effectively identify anemia cases to enable appropriate referral and treatment.
Northern Region
Support integrated nutrition, water, agriculture and economic growth program in 12 districts under the Feed the Future and
Global Health Initiative;
Create access to credit for micro‐holders, particularly women working in high value crops; and
Capacity building and strengthening of local support networks to address livelihood and nutrition needs.
In Greater Accra, Central and Western regions:
Engaging leaders and communities through activities that aim to improve knowledge, attitude, practices and behaviors of communities and individuals related to infant and young child feeding practices and increase prevalence of minimum acceptable diets;
Capacity building of service providers through in‐service training to strengthen skills and competencies in the delivery of nutrition and HIV/AIDS services; and
Quality assurance approaches including supportive supervision to improve performance of nutrition and HIV/AIDS services;
USAID’s Nutrition Activities:
The Focus Region Health Project (FRHP) works to strengthen access to, quality, and use of nutrition services delivery in the three focus regions through integrated approaches;
The Behavior Change Support (BCS) supports behavior change communication; social mobilization and empowerment; and community ‐ based distribution programs to create demand and use for maternal and child health and nutrition services.
The Deliver II project provides technical support for strengthening forecasting, procuring distribution and monitoring CMAM supplies nationwide.
Food and Nutrition Technical Assistance Project (FANTA) supports
Ministry of Health/Ghana Health Service to integrate and scale‐up
