Feed the Future Feed the Future is President Obama’s $3.5 billion initiative to achieve global stability and prosperity by addressing the root causes of hunger that limit the potential of millions people. In Ghana, USAID is leading the Feed the Future effort, applying USAID

Forward reform principals of partnerships, innovation and a focus on results.

Promoting sustainable food security is an objective in Ghana’s own national development agenda which recognizes that nearly two million people, most of them in the three northern regions of Ghana, remain vulnerable to food insecurity, including micronutrient deficiency. USAID will help Ghana establish a lasting foundation for change by working through country-owned processes and forming multi-stakeholder partnerships.

Strategy USAID is mobilizing an estimated $285 million to strengthen rice, maize and soya value chains; to increase the resilience of vulnerable communities and households; and to improve the nutritional status of women and children, mainly in the Northern, Upper East and Upper

West regions of Ghana.

USAID, in coordination with the Government of Ghana and its development partners, is designing Feed the Future programs that:

work through and strengthen the Government’s existing administrative systems; use competitive procurements that are accessible to local organizations; seek partnerships with private corporate entities and other donors; and, deliver non-project assistance to the Ghana Government agencies. The technical areas include:

Nutrition Programs Support the Government of Ghana to improve the nutrition status of women and children through promoting increased consumption of diverse, quality foods and improving behaviors related to the nutrition of women and young children.

Country Led Food Security Initiatives Work with the Government of Ghana to identify and facilitate private investment into the agricultural sector in order to strengthen rice, Selling maize in Ghana market

Ghana transform its agricultural sector and create new economic opportunities.

Improving Community Resiliency Support the Government of Ghana to help rural, farming communities in northern Ghana to produce more diverse, higher quality foods; strengthen local support networks to address the ongoing needs of vulnerable households; increase income diversification; and, mitigate drops in income and consumption during difficult times (flood, drought, spikes in food prices) through increasing access to credit.

Sustainable Management of Marine Fisheries Support sustainable management of Ghana’s coastal and marine systems to ensure long-term socio-economic benefits to fishing communities adapting to climate change and other threats to biodiversity.

Partnership Investment Development Fund Fund public-private partnerships to leverage private resources, ideas, technology and research to develop best agricultural practices, build better infrastructure and create greater economic opportunities for local businesses, farmers and trade associations and unions.

Value Chain Enhancement Support economic growth and poverty reduction in Ghana by modernizing agriculture and improving the quality, post-harvest handling and trading of staple products, such as maize, soya and rice so that rural smallholders and small and medium-sized agricultural enterprises can increase their incomes.

Capacity Building Support to the implementation of Ghana’s Medium Term Agriculture

Sector Investment Plan by: providing technical and policy guidance to Ministers of State and other high-level policy-makers; building capacity for geospatial information and knowledge management systems; addressing specific knowledge gaps concerning agricultural and rural development; and, improving the data and knowledge base for agricultural research and policy platforms that will ultimately modernize the agriculture sector, particularly staple crops, contributing to the overall economic growth of Ghana.
