PURCHASE DESCRIPTION
1. Statement of Need and Purpose: The “MR CoilTech 7T Visual Cortex” head coil is required by users of the Siemens Terra 7T MRI Scanner at the Functional MRI Core Facility (FMRIF) at the Bethesda Campus of the NIH, to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of MRI images during fMRI studies of visual cortex. Scanning methods are being developed at the FMRIF to increase the resolution of fMRI data acquisition.
This increased resolution is typically associated with a significant decrease in SNR, creating a major obstacle to conducting fMRI experiments. The MR CoilTech coil will help recover some of the SNR lost by scanning at high resolution while providing an open face design to allow large field of view to participants in visual studies.
2. Background Information and Objective: The MR CoilTech 7T Visual Cortex Coil is equipped with 32 highly sensitive receive elements arranged around the occipital and parietal regions of the head, which are closely packed and placed optimally around the head to maximize the signal strength. The MR CoilTech coil is also equipped with 8 transmit coils, which will enable parallel imaging. Parallel imaging will increase the speed of data acquisition, which will in turn result in the collection of a larger amount of data per experiment, again enhancing SNR. The 8 transmit coils can also be used in receiver mode, bringing the total number of receive coils to 40, and extending the sensitivity depth closer to the center of the head.
3. Generic Name of Product: 32-channel receiver, 8-channel transmit-receive head coil for 7T Terra Siemens MRI scanner.
4. Purchase Description:
Trade Name: MR CoilTech Brand Name: MR CoilTech Manufacturer: MR CoilTech Model: 7T Visual Cortex Head Coil
5. Salient Characteristics:
• 32-channel receive elements, tightly spaced around the head to optimize MRI signal strength.
• 8-channel transmit elements to enable parallel imaging, which should also be usable as receive coils. Compatible with the Terra 7T scanner produced by Siemens.
• The coil elements will be arranged around the back of the head to maximize the ability of subjects to view stimuli with a wider field of view than current whole-brain coils.
• Additionally, one-year warranty is requested.
6. Quantity:
One (1) x MR CoilTech 7T Visual Cortex Coil
