Version 11-30-2016-1 FAR Part 11—Describing Agency Needs
STATEMENT OF WORK (SERVICES)
(SOW)
GENERAL INFORMATION
Title of Project:
Plasma metabolon assay for Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA) Statement of Need and Purpose:
This purchase is to assay global metabolomics data and short chain fatty acids (SCFA) via the Metabolon platform from 369 blood samples in the BLSA. These metabolomics data will be used to identify metabolomic signatures of anthropometric aging quantified via a 3D body scanner.
Background Information and Objective:
The objective of the study is to identify metabolomics profiles, including longitudinal alterations, and related pathways related to anthropometric aging. Aging is associated with anthropometric changes that are linked to disease risk and functional limitations, but the biological underpinnings of anthropometric aging are less clear. Preliminary data show that anthropometric aging is associated with loss of sensorimotor function, lower extremity mass, and lower levels of leucine in the plasma, suggesting muscle weakness. Identification of metabolomics profiles of anthropometric aging may reveal biological processes underlying the connection between anthropometric aging and functional deficit and diseases. These metabolomic profiles may be used clinically to identify the pace of anthropometric aging and estimate functional decline and disease risk. In order to have compatible plasma metabolomics data in the BLSA, Metabolon assay - the same platform used to analyze plasma metabolites and SCFA previously in the BLSA - will be used in this study.
Period of Performance:
One year from date of the award
