About this file

This file is an inventory of artwork for Big Cypress National Preserve and Everglades National Park, containing detailed records for 75 individual art pieces created between 1974 and 2017. The collection includes diverse artworks such as oil paintings, watercolors, photographs, lithographs, woodcut prints, and ink drawings by artists like Sam Vinikoff, Charley Harper, Edward Glannon, Anna Marie Pavlik, and Daniel Beard. The artworks predominantly feature landscapes, wildlife, and ecological scenes from the Florida Everglades and Big Cypress regions, with subjects including cypress trees, alligators, birds, snails, and various flora and fauna native to these ecosystems.

The inventory document includes comprehensive metadata for each artwork, such as accession numbers, catalog details, physical measurements, materials, condition notes, and conservation recommendations. Many pieces underwent conservation treatments in 2011, with recommendations for reframing, surface cleaning, varnishing, and archival preservation. The artwork collection appears to be part of a broader federal contract opportunity (Solicitation Number: 140P5425Q0042) issued by the Department of the Interior National Park Service Southeast Region, focused on assessing and preserving artwork for these national park sites.

EVER-00186EVER 6982HAVELL, ROBERT1835 reproduction of a print from Audubon's "Birds of America, A Portfolio" showing a great white heron on the shoreline with a fish in it's beak and the city of Key West, Florida in the background. Colored engraving by John James Audubon, entitled in the middle, directly below the image "The Great White Heron, Ardea Occidentalis, Male adult spring plumage, View Key West." Lower left hand corner says "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon, F.R.S.F.L.S." Lower right hand corner says "Engraved, Printed & Coloured by R. Havell, 1835." Plate identification is noted as "No. 57" in top left corner and "Plate CCLXXXI" in top right corner.

The support is heavy rag paper (38.75" x 25.75"). Watermark, upper left: J. Whatman, 1836. Whatman is a hand-made drawing paper and is known to have been used by Havell. This is an elephant folio engraving. The margins have been trimmed irregularly. The medium is a combination of engraving and aquatint printing techniques in black printer's ink, and then the print was hand colored in blues, browns, yellow, and green. The color is stable in water.

Robert Havell and son were printers in London. Audubon changed printers when he found out that the Havell father and son team of printers could reproduce his art for less money and on better paper. Robert Havell, Jr. contracted Audubon's works and Havell, Sr. colored the plates and supervised the staff of colorers. Both Havells worked under direct verbal and written orders from Audubon. There were 435 color plates produced for Audubon's "The Birds of America" depicting 1,065 life-size figures of birds and it is estimated that between 161 and 175 complete folios were published. The first 10 plates were engraved by William H. Lizars in 1826-1827; the remainder of the plates were engraved in London by Robert Havell, Jr, who reworked several of Lizar's plates. Plate No. 57 was part of Volume III, published 1834-1835. For more information see the accession file.

EVER-01737EVER 62327VINIKOFF, SAMFramed oil painting entitled "Soaring Swallowtail Kite #5" by Sam Vinikoff. The canvas is rectangular. The painting illustrates five swallowtail kites soaring over pinelands. The center of the painting is dominated by an area of clouds. The proper left and right sides of the paintng include pine trees in the foreground which have thicker layers of paint making them 3-dimensional. It appears that the artist make a mistake with the large kite on the proper right side of the painting, which may have attempted to be overed up as a cloud. Likewise, there is a stray area of orange paint near the pine tree on the proper right side. These suggest that this was one of Vinikoff's later works but the painting is undated. The artist's signature "VinikoFF" is on the proper right side of the painting in among the trees. The painting appears to have been framed slightly too big (or the canvas has slipped in the frame) as the proper right upper corner has a visible linear area where the unpainted canvas shows. The paintings frame is a "typical" Vinkoff frame in the style he like the best, according to his daughter Linda Bowman. Vinikoff did not frame his own works but repeatedly requested the same frame. The title of the painting is written on the back, in the artist's hand.CANVAS --OIL PAINT --WOODFRAME = H 26.9, W 52.1 CMExamined in 2011: Documented via digital photography and written reports. 2011-CCS narrative notes

This inventory comprises of condition/conservation notes from the 2011 artwork CCS. Text in blue was completed; black or red text were suggestions and recommendations that should be reviewed by the selected Contractor.2011 Conservation Treatment
1. NOT TREATED - EVER14313 (HFACS# - CT17-30h*) – Ranger’s House at EVER – Iris Rhodus – watercolor on paper (not framed – requires new frame) (16”h x 12”w)EVER 14313
(HFACS labor hours = 8 vs. original Bid Specification hours = 10)Documented via digital photography and written reports. No further treatment conducted.
CONDITION: Paper is stained from being in contact with an acidic backing support. The piece should not be bleached because it will affect the watercolor pigments. It is glued on at the top corners on the back onto acidic card stock.
PROPOSED TREATMENT:
· Document treatment with digital photography (before, during, & after treatment), and with written reports.
· Surface clean watercolor with crumbled eraser.
· Remove artifact from the acidic board that it is glued to. Remove adhesive residue mechanically and with solvents or aqueous solutions. Relax the paper edges back into plane with moisture, acid-free blotters and weights.
· Hinge watercolor onto back mat with Japanese tissue and wheat starch paste using “T” hinges.
· Mat artifact with acid-free window and back mat, Coroplast backing board, and UV filtering acrylic sheeting. Make sealed package for framing with 3M Mylar tape on the edges.
· Select several frame possibilities for NPS staff to review and choose for this artifact. The cost of the frame is not included in this current contract. A ballpark cost of the new frame would be $200.
· Properly frame the artifact using braided picture wire, “D” Ring hangers, and mending plates.
· Wrap the artifact in preparation for return to the client.

2. NOT TREATED - BICY14615 (HFACS# - CT17-30e*) – Everglade Scene – Sam Vinikoff – oil on canvas (not framed – requires new frame) (5” h x 6”w)BICY14615
(HFACS labor hours = 6.5 vs. original Bid Specification hours = 2)Documented via digital photography and written reports. No further treatment conducted.
CONDITON: The small oil painting is stored in an acid-free folder. It has not been, mounted, stretched, matted or framed in the past. We suggest that this piece be treated like a work-of-art on paper, and should be displayed with an acid-free window matt behind UV filtering acrylic.
PROPOSED TREATMENT:
· Document treatment with digital photography (before, during, & after treatment), and with written reports.
· Surface clean the painting with a mild detergent followed by a naphtha rinse.
· Hinge the oil painting onto an acid-free back mat with gummed cotton tape using “T” hinges.
