5 | 43 for coordinating and rerouting the flow of pedestrian traffic with input from the COR. The contractor shall provide all signs and barriers that will clearly inform visitors how to navigate the construction site safely.

This project will add approximately 10 to 15 linear feet of seating to the existing 3-feet high limestone seat wall.

This work includes repointing the entire seat wall as over half of the mortared joints are failing. The mortar shall be Type N and a color additive shall be used to match and blend with existing limestone steps. The contractor shall submit a mock-up to be inspected and approved by the COR before ordering and repointing begins. This project will also extend the existing concrete amphitheater walking surface area to the north and south with approximately 161 S.F. of exposed aggregate concrete. The new concrete shall match the exposed aggregate of the existing adjacent concrete paving surface for both the amphitheater and the sidewalk. The finish of the concrete shall be exposed aggregate and shall match in color and texture the existing amphitheater and sidewalk concrete finish. Contractor shall submit a 2-feet by 2-feet mock-up panel poured and finished to be approved by the COR prior to ordering materials. The edge of the new amphitheater surface will be lined with a limestone curb (W6” x H8”-10”), which will serve as visible amphitheater edge and help retain the additional plaza fill material.

The amphitheater plaza must be reconstructed to provide access that meets the Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Standards (ABAAS) for the major routes and facilities. This project will also include placing approximately 5 yards of crushed limestone a maximum of 3 inch in diameter with a minimum diameter of 1.5 inches around the perimeter of the amphitheater to create a visible footprint and minimize erosion. Existing vegetation shall be left undisturbed beyond the limit-of-disturbance. All vegetation adjacent to the amphitheater shall be protected at all times. Any damage to existing vegetation shall be reported to the CO immediately and all damaged vegetation shall be replaced by the contractor to the satisfaction of the COR, at no cost to the Government.

General tasks include extending exposed aggregate concrete to match existing adjacent sidewalk paving and shall be ABAAS compliant in running and cross slopes as noted on plans. The COR will verify that slopes conform with ABAAS.

All work shall be performed in a professional manner and shall carry a minimum of a 1-year workmanship warranty. This is a primary visitor use area; therefore, visitor safety and meeting ABAAS requirements is key for project success. The contractor shall be responsible for developing a construction schedule and coordinating all work with the COR so as to limit visitor impact as the Dig Shelter will remain open during construction.

2.1OBJECTIVES:

This project is intended to rehabilitate the amphitheater area by modifying the amphitheater paving surface area to minimize social trails. The amphitheater plaza shall be extended to provide access that meets the ABAAS for the major routes and facilities. The rehabilitation includes the addition of an ABAAS companion seating area.

2.2BACKGROUND:

The amphitheater was constructed in 2008. Construction was contracted by the City of WACO. In 2015 Waco Mammoth National Monument was established in partnership with the National Park Service, City of WACO, Baylor University and the Waco Mammoth Foundation, Inc. A steel post and fabric shade sail style awning were constructed in 2016. The amphitheater rests on both Federal and Waco City property and consists of a pie shaped concrete pad with two-stone step seating on the outer edge. Visitation has increased and tour groups have worn down grassy areas around the amphitheater causing erosion issues.

Work shall be conducted between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and actual work dates and schedule shall be coordinated with the COR and CO at least ten (10) working days in advance.

Upon receiving Notice to Proceed, contractor shall begin work within 10 days.
