I. Background

The U.S. Geological Survey - Western Fisheries Research Center, Seattle, WA (WFRC) is seeking a Service Agreement for Veterinary Services. The WFRC is engaged in scientific research to improve the understanding and control of disease affecting salmonids and other aquatic animals. An active Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and program is in place, which mandates that a licensed Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) is available to provide veterinary services pertaining to animal welfare and to ensure compliance with laws and regulations pertaining to animal care.

II. Duties The duties of the DVM are to:

• Provide veterinary medical care for aquatic laboratory animal program consistent with the guidelines prescribed in the “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals” (National Academy of Sciences, 2011) and in the “PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.”

• Assist in the composition and review of aquatic animal specific standard operating procedures and policies that are to be submitted to the IACUC for review. When needed, provide training for WFRC staff on procedures and policies.

III. Qualifications

Mastery of veterinary medical science concepts, principles, and practices is required in gross, clinical, and microscopic pathology, toxicology, microbiology, or virology of fish and other aquatic animal diseases. The doctor is a diagnostic medical authority in various laboratory and animal assays and procedures to obtain a diagnosis of diseases and in the development and application of new and improved laboratory methods for the examination and evaluation of such diseases.
