SECTION 2 – Statement of Work
Statement of Work for
Design Services/A History of U.S. Presidential Memorials Book 15 July 2020
A. BACKGROUND
The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) was created by Congress in 1910 to guide the development of Washington, DC and to ensure the highest quality design for the symbols of our nation: the National Capital city and its public monuments, memorials, buildings, and spaces; as well as coins and medals produced by the U.S. Mint, military insignia, overseas military cemeteries, and national commemorative works.
The CFA manages an ongoing publication program on topics related to its jurisdiction on the design of the national capital city and the artistic and architectural symbols of the American government, history, and political system. The most recent publication was a monograph titled Palace of State:
The Eisenhower Executive Office Building, released in 2018; in observance of the Commission’s centennial, the agency published a comprehensive history book, Civic Art: A Centennial History of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, published in 2013. Other titles in the CFA’s publication history include surveys of historic Georgetown architecture, of bridges and other structures in Washington, DC, and of the significant buildings on prominent boulevards in the city, Sixteenth Street and Massachusetts Avenue, NW.
This project would be the first of its kind, a comprehensive presentation of the commemoration of American presidents, from the early 19th century to the present. The book will examine the typologies and architectural forms used to convey the political, historic, and personal importance of past presidents, whether as burial sites, temple-like memorials, presidential libraries, or other commemorative forms such as landscapes. Because of its sweeping historic scope and long-term archival value, the publication will be a large-format hard-cover book of approximately 250 pages of the highest quality offset full-color printing on archival paper.
