Summary

This is a technical specification document for vacuum-jacketed helium piping lines to be procured for NASA Glenn Research Center's THERMAS (Testbed for High Energy cRyogenic Materials And Superconductors) facility. The specification defines the design and fabrication requirements for hard vacuum-jacketed piping assemblies supporting the CHILL project's cryogenic helium refrigeration system located at Building 191 in Cleveland, Ohio.

The procurement requires two line assemblies comprising four total pipe spools, two male bayonet plugs, and one vacuum operator. The supply line assembly consists of approximately 35 feet of 1" x 2-1/2" vacuum-jacketed piping with male and female bayonet terminations, while the return line assembly consists of approximately 36 feet of identical piping, each split into two spools via contractor-supplied male/female bayonet connections. Materials specifications require 304L stainless steel for inner process lines, 300 series stainless steel for outer vacuum jackets and bayonet plugs. The piping must handle gaseous helium at 150 psig design pressure with an operating temperature range of 4 K to 300 K, complying with ASME B31.3 Process Piping Standard. Contractors must submit electronic CAD drawings or fabrication drawings prior to manufacturing and include freight-on-board shipping costs to NASA Glenn Research Center, 21000 Brookpark Road, Building 191, Cleveland, Ohio 44135, in their firm-fixed price proposal. Documentation deliverables are referenced in an accompanying Statement of Work.

Testbed for High Energy cRyogenic Materials And Superconductors (THERMAS) Helium Vacuum-Jacketed Line Specification

8/7/2026

Rev 0

Background

The Cryogenic High-power Integrated Low Loss Motor Demonstration (CHILL) project at NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) in Cleveland, OH is currently building the Testbed for High Energy cRyogenic Materials And Superconductors (THERMAS) at Building 191 to test materials and components for future high-power, superconducting aircraft powertrains. This facility will accommodate a large cryogenic helium refrigeration system that is housed inside a 40-foot shipping container. This container will be located outside Building 191, with vacuum-jacketed supply and return lines routed into the test cell and connecting the refrigerator to the test hardware. This Specification defines the technical design and fabrication requirements of the vacuum-jacketed lines, and compliments the accompanying Statement of Work for procurement.
