About this file
This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), specifically the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), for anisotropic mechanical behavior characterization of additively manufactured components. The performance period is nine months from Authority to Proceed (ATP), approximately August 15, 2026 through May 15, 2027.
The contractor shall conduct comprehensive characterization and analysis of mechanical test data and microstructural properties of Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) oxide dispersion strengthened thin-wall and bulk alloy samples provided by NASA. Key technical tasks include: detailed characterization and analysis of mechanical test data and post-mortem sample analysis; comprehensive literature review documenting current state-of-the-art regarding microstructures, failure mechanisms, and mechanical performance; specialized expertise in thin-wall, extreme-temperature mechanical testing of L-PBF oxide dispersion-strengthened (ODS) alloys, with documented capability to conduct precision testing on specimens below 1 mm thickness at temperatures ranging from 2000°F to 2400°F; baseline microstructural characterization using scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, microhardness testing, grain size evaluation, chemical etching, and residual stress measurements; nano-computed tomography scanning and surface texture characterization to establish baseline porosity, surface roughness, and defect distributions; high cycle fatigue testing at extreme temperatures in both as-built and machined conditions with collaboratively determined test matrices and protocols; detailed geometric and microstructural characterization of specific L-PBF alloy samples (GRX-810, ORCAlloy-21, and 754-ODS); rigorous advanced post-mechanical test fractography with failure mechanism analysis; comprehensive data summarization with explicit notation of statistical anomalies or testing issues; and organization and maintenance of summary and raw data for future evaluation. The contractor shall provide quarterly status updates and ensure active student researcher involvement under Principal Investigator supervision. The deliverable is a minimum of one draft peer-reviewed journal article, with up to two draft articles possible depending on data volume and scope.
