About this file
This is a Statement of Work for an Outdoor Teambuilding and Supervised Leadership Expedition Training course to be provided by NASA's Astronaut Office Training Branch. The 10-day expedition will accommodate up to 16 astronaut candidates and assigned crew members in the remote wilderness outside Lander, Wyoming, from September 8-17, 2026. The vendor must provide sufficient instructors to maintain a low student-to-instructor ratio and deliver a comprehensive leadership curriculum covering communication, group dynamics, leadership styles, and decision-making strategies entirely within the remote wilderness setting. The course is designed to simulate aspects of spaceflight and provide teams with development opportunities and practice prior to missions.
Instructors must possess extensive qualifications including experience on extended remote wilderness expeditions, advanced risk management capabilities, medical certifications (CPR and Wilderness First Responder), proficiency in navigation, camping, and backpacking, and demonstrated experience facilitating leadership curricula while managing group dynamics. The vendor must have detailed understanding of NASA's objectives and ability to collaboratively customize the course. Tuition includes a comprehensive equipment package consisting of weather protection items (puff jacket, fleece pants, wind shirt and pants), camping gear (backpack, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, sit pad, compression stuff sack), organizational items (three small stuff sacks, three plastic trash bags), and survival/hygiene supplies (lighter, hand sanitizer, water treatment system).
