About this file

This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for a NASA contract to develop and optimize a Continuous Compression Molding (CCM) process for applying amorphous thermoplastic films to semi-crystalline thermoplastic prepreg materials. The project objective is to heal amorphous polymer films to the top and bottom surfaces of semi-crystalline thermoplastic prepreg through the CCM process.

The vendor is required to complete all work within six months of award at their facility and deliver 10 sets of 20 feet by 12 inches of processed material produced using up to 10 different thermal history cycles representative of NASA's requirements. The vendor must conduct the requisite evaluation trials to establish a viable processing method, provide thermal history data measured by embedded thermocouples for each delivered material set, supply all consumables required for the CCM process, grant NASA personnel access to the facility during material builds, and ship the finished material to NASA Langley Research Center. NASA will provide all materials to be processed (film and prepreg) including sufficient quantities for sacrificial plies and evaluation trials, handle material shipping to the vendor, and specify the desired thermal processing cycles in terms of temperature versus time.

Statement of Work

Project Title:

Continuous Compression Molding (CCM) of Amorphous Thermoplastic Film to Semi-crystalline Thermoplastic Prepreg

Project Overview:

The objective of this project is to develop and optimize a CCM process of healing amorphous polymer films to the top and bottom surface of a semi-crystalline thermoplastic prepreg.

Period and Place of Performance All work shall be performed at vendor facility. All work shall be complete material shipped with 6 months of award.

Requirements and Specifications:

Vendor shall provide:

• Requisite number of evaluation trials to determine a viable method for processing the film/prepreg/film stack through the CCM equipment.

• Qty. 10 of 20 ft × 12 in processed material produced in CCM equipment with thermal history cycles (up to 10 different cycles) representative of those requested by NASA.

• For each of the Qty. 10 delivered material sets, thermal history data as measured by embedded thermocouples.

• All consumables required for the CCM process.

• Access to the facility for NASA personnel during material builds.

• Shipping of material back to NASA Langley Research Center.

NASA shall provide:

• All materials to be processed (film and prepreg). Shipping of material to vendor.

• Sufficient material for sacrificial plies and evaluation trials.

• Desired thermal processing cycles (temperature vs. time).
