About this file
This Statement of Work (SOW) details the modification of a 56.5 ft long batch curing oven at NASA Langley Research Center to increase its maximum operating temperature from 550°F to 750°F. The scope requires a contractor to perform specific tasks including removing and replacing the existing heater house, installing a new heater house with increased height, upgrading exhaust and recirculation blowers, modifying interior ductwork, and ensuring the oven can operate at the higher temperature.
Key contractor requirements include fabricating a new heater house 18 inches taller with a plug fan recirculation blower, replacing the exhaust blower, maintaining the 144 KW heater plug, and performing a 25-point empty chamber temperature uniformity survey test. The project must be completed within 16 weeks after order receipt, with delivery to NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA. The modification is specifically for processing high-temperature materials like thermoplastic composites for the STMD Deployable Composite Boom Fabrication (DCB-FAB) project.

STATEMENT OF WORK
1.0 Introduction/Background:
In 2022, NASA LaRC purchased from Wisconsin Oven Corp. (WOC) a 56.5 ft long batch curing oven and associated control systems, which reside in Building 1238B, R127.
Since then, the oven has been used to process thermoset composite parts such as long booms. There is need to increase the maximum service temperature of the oven to process high temperature materials such as thermoplastic composites that need a processing temperature of 750° F. The current upper operating temperature of the oven is 550° F.
2.0 Scope of Work: This SOW covers the upgrade of the existing long oven (Serial #13853A) at NASA LaRC to increase its maximum operating temperature from 550° F to 750° F.
3.0 Objectives: The contractor shall provide onsite inspection and modification of the composite curing oven to increase its maximum operating temperature of the equipment manufactured under Wisconsin Oven serial #13853A.
4.0 Description of the Work/Contractor Tasks:
The contractor shall provide services to perform these tasks:
1. With oven staged in back-room area of increased ceiling height, the complete heater house shall be removed and area prepped for acceptance of new larger heater house.
2. Fabricate, supply and install new heater house with increased height of approximately 18 inches, same length and depth as previous, with increased heating capabilities equipped with one (1) plug fan style recirculation blower (overall CFM to remain approximately the same of 18-20,000 CFM). Plug fan would be installed on roof of new heater house, increasing overall oven height to an additional 24 inches. Overall system height increase of approximately 42 inches.
3. Removal of current GP 12 2,500 CFM, 2 HP exhaust blower and replace with new 3000 CFM, 3 HP exhaust system with all new mounting channel and new roof protrusion.
4. Alterations to interior duct work and downcomers to facilitate the acceptance of new heater house with alternative exhaust and recirculation blowers shall be performed.
5. New heater house shall utilize the same style heater plug of 144 KW which shall be wired back to the control panel. It is understood, that if the current input power is kept, it will take the new design a longer amount of heat up time to achieve set point.
6. All modifications that shall enable the oven to be rated for a maximum operating temperature of 750°F.
7. Oven to be relocated back into final position and then shall be tested for proper operation after above service is complete.
8. Twenty-five (25) point, empty chamber temperature uniformity survey test to be performed at the end of the installation with no guarantee of any +/- off desired set point temperatures. If performance is not acceptable, WOC shall propose adjustments to optimize overall interior oven chamber for proper air/heat distribution.
9. All field service & in-house labor, engineering, updated prints, and all travel & living expenses shall be included.
10. Technical or progress meetings with NASA are recommended but not formally requested.
5.0 Deliverables and Period of Performance: The contractor shall deliver the services within 16 weeks after receipt of order.
Items shall be delivered to the following address:
NASA Langley Research Center Hampton, VA 23681-2199 mailto:Juan.m.fernandez@nasa.gov
