About this file

This is a technical specification for US Army Officer Sabers, Scabbards, and Covers for the 3rd US Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard).

The specification establishes detailed requirements for saber blade materials, dimensions, and construction. Blades must be forged from carbon steel (grade C55) or X30Cr13 stainless steel with a curved single-edged design featuring a blood groove extending 21 inches down the blade. Rockwell "C" hardness must range from 48 to 54 at three measurement points. Seven classes of sabers are specified with blade lengths from 28 to 34 inches and overall lengths from 33-3/8 to 39-3/8 inches, with tolerances of +/- 3/8 inch. Carbon steel blades require nickel plating at minimum 0.00059 inches thickness. Blades must be acid etched with US Army saber designs including the US Colors, Army Colors, US Coat of Arms, crossed cannons, military flags, scrollwork, and manufacturer's maker's mark with country of origin. The hilt assembly comprises an end nut, grip assembly with black ABS plastic, and guard—all made from copper-zinc alloy castings containing 85% copper and finished with copper and nickel plating. The scabbard body is constructed from 1mm carbon steel (AISI 1008) with shoe, rings, ring bands, mouthpiece components, and conical-shaped cellulose liners with foam reinforcement. All metal components require copper plating (minimum 0.00059 to 0.0012 inches) followed by nickel plating. Each saber includes a white felt cushion washer and dark blue polyester/cotton cloth cover with drawstring. Quality assurance follows MIL-STD-105 at Inspection Level III with acceptable quality levels of 2.5 DHU for major defects, 15.0 DHU for majors and minor A defects combined, and 40.0 DHU for total defects. Contractors must submit preproduction samples with test results before production commences and perform contractor inspection before government final inspection and acceptance. Table III provides comprehensive defect classifications across all components. Finished sabers must be packaged in cloth covers and shipped in boxes or convolute wound tubes to ensure safe delivery.
