About this file
This is a military specification document for US Army NCO Sword, Scabbard and Cover manufactured for the 3rd US Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard).
The specification establishes detailed requirements for a complete sword assembly including blade, hilt components, scabbard, and protective cover. The sword blade must be forged from stainless steel (Type X30Cr13/AISI 420) with a Rockwell hardness of 48-54, polished to bright finish, and include an acid-etched maker's mark. Seven blade length classes are specified ranging from 28 to 34 inches, with corresponding overall lengths and weight tolerances (+/- 0.1 lbs). The hilt assembly comprises an end nut, pommel end cap, ABS plastic grip wrapped with silver-plated copper wire, grip bands, and a curved guard—all copper-zinc alloy castings (85% copper) requiring copper plating (minimum 15 microns), nickel plating (minimum 5 microns), and gold plating (minimum 0.5 microns). The scabbard consists of a polyurethane or carbon steel tube wrapped in black calf leather, with copper-zinc alloy shoe and mouthpiece fittings, conical brown cellulose liners with foam reinforcement, and gold-plated screws. Each sword includes a white felt cushion (0.1 inches thick) and dark blue polyester/cotton cloth cover (80/20 blend, minimum 4.5 ounces per yard). Quality assurance follows MIL-STD-105 at Inspection Level III with acceptable quality levels of 2.5 DHU for majors, 15.0 DHU for majors and minor A defects combined, and 40.0 DHU for total defects. Preproduction sample approval is required before production commences, and contractor inspection records must be maintained and made available to the Government. Packaging requires each sword and scabbard to be placed in the cloth cover, then inserted in a box or spiral wound tube.
