A gamma camera is used in nuclear medicine to create images of the human body by detecting and visualizing the distribution of a radioactive tracer, known as a radiopharmaceutical, that has been introduced into the patient's body. This non-invasive imaging technique helps diagnose and monitor diseases by showing the structure and function of various organs and tissues, such as the heart, brain, lungs, thyroid, and liver. Applications include diagnosing heart conditions, detecting bone infections or tumors, identifying cancers, and assessing organ function. Gamma cameras are often used by medical care providers for one or more of the following:
• Cardiac Imaging: Monitors heart function, assesses heart pumping efficiency, and identifies damaged or scarred tissue from heart attacks.
• Bone Imaging: Detects bone infections, fractures, or tumors.
• Cancer Imaging: Helps in the early detection and monitoring of certain cancers.
• Organ Function Studies: Assesses the function and health of organs like the thyroid, liver, kidneys, and lungs.
• Infection and Inflammation Imaging: Identifies areas of infection or inflammation in the body.
The service agreement that is needed by the government is only available for purchase from the manufacturer, Spectrum Dynamics Medical, Inc. and is not available from third party distributors/contractors in any socioeconomic category. In a sole source letter provided to the government from the manufacturer Spectrum Dynamics Medical, Inc. formally stated the following, detailed below.
