2. CONTRACT TITLE:
Bedding Dispensing Stations for the Research and Development Veterinary Medical Unit
3. BACKGROUND:
The VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS) Research and Development (R&D) Service has received FY26 Lab Animal Major equipment (LAM) funding to purchase 2 labor saving devices that drop bedding into cages to prepare them for sterilization and use.
The 2 bedding dispensing stations will help maintain the sanitation of the area and reduce hundreds of repetitive motions by staff each week. Effective sanitation of cages and cage components is accomplished by various cage and rack washers and the sterilization of prepared cages to control the possible spread of unwanted microorganisms.
The VAMHCS Veterinary Medical Unit (VMU) has 400 cages in use a day to house about 1,000 mice. Preparing 400 cages a week requires 20 bags of bedding, each weighing about 10 pounds. The bed dispensing stations will use gravity to dump the bedding into the cages saving VMU staff from the bending and scooping currently required for the cage preparation.
