1. DESCRIPTION. The Contractor shall provide all the required data, special tooling, support equipment (SE), training, personnel requirements and facilities planning for rehosting of the Indoor Compact Antenna Range (ICAR) 4 System and to procure ICARMS #4 upgrades as a turnkey operation to the Electronics Maintenance Group (EMXG) at Robins Air Force Base (AFB), Georgia. The Contractor shall not change or modify any existing structural, enclosure, or real property like items to include the anechoic chamber, reflector, control room, floor slab, chamber Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning (HVAC), power, lighting, and fire protection, without express Government concurrence or approval.
1.1 Background. ICARMS #4 at Robins Air Force Base is a Scientific Atlanta (SA) System consists of the SA 5751 Compact range and SA 2041A Antenna Measurement System produced in the 1980’s.
1.1.1 The Scientific-Atlanta Model 5751 Compact Antenna Range allows antennas to be tested under far-field conditions at an indoor facility. Its size is approximately 20 x 40 feet. The system is capable of making gain, boresight, and pattern measurements for directive microwave antennas. The current range configuration enables direct measurement of the far-field radiation pattern of antennas up to four feet in diameter. The range consists of a large precision (192in x 186in) parabolic reflector, feed assembly, and the test antenna positioning system. Feed antennas operate over standard waveguide bands and transmit linearly polarized radiation. An adjacent room (Control Room) houses the data acquisition, data analysis, positioner control, and positioner display systems.
1.1.2 The SA Model 5751 Compact Antenna Range subsystems of interest for the ICARMS #4 upgrade are: Test Positioner Assembly; Feed Positioner Assembly; Wavefront Alignment Kit; and SA-2041A Antenna Measurement System.
1.1.3 The Test Positioner Assembly consists of a High Accuracy Polarization Positioner mounted on the SA Azimuth/Elevation Test Positioner atop a Slide Assembly. This provides a Roll-over-Azimuth-over-Elevation-over-Slide design. This system was installed with high-accuracy, dual-speed synchros to provide position feedback for each axis.
1.1.4 The Feed Positioner Assembly contains a motorized polarization rotator and a dual-speed synchro package. These items permit the signal feed antenna to be rotated about the longitudinal axis indicated. Using this polarization rotator, the linear polarization of the Model 5751 Compact Antenna Range electromagnetic field can be changed from horizontal to vertical, or vice versa, or a desired point between horizontal and vertical. The current Feed Polarization Positioner Assembly has a continuous range of travel.
1.1.5 The Wavefront Alignment Kit consists of a Nion Model 6B Brightfield Auto-Collimator mounted on an adjustable alignment fixture located atop the mast assembly. The mast assembly includes a mounting tower that is rigidly attached to the floor with a precision ground flat steel plate and mounting hardware. The Wavefront Alignment Kit also consists of a precision mirror tilt assembly attached to the rear of the SA-5751 Polarization Positioner. The Wavefront Alignment Kit is used to align the range’s optical/mechanical reference to the wavefront normal of the range’s electromagnetic axis.
1.1.6 The Scientific-Atlanta 2041A Antenna Measurement System allows for the reception of measurement data from an antenna under test (AUT). The SA-2041A Antenna Measurement System consists of three major subsystems: transmit system; receiving system; and positioning system. The transmit subsystem consists of a SA-2150B Microwave Signal Source and SA-2185 Microwave Frequency Synthesizer. The receiving subsystem consists of a SA-1783 Programmable Microwave Receiver. The positioning subsystem consists of a SA-2012 Positioner Programmer, SA-1842 Digital Synchro Display unit, and SA-4180 Positioner Controller and SCR unit. The SA-4180 Positioner Controller and SCR unit provide motor control for all 5 axes: Azimuth; Elevation; Antenna Roll; Floor Slide; and Feed Polarization. The SA-2041A Antenna Measurement System contains a SA-1580 Pattern Recorder to provide permanent plotted records of the AUT.
